Venetian Snares, Autechre, Richard Devine, Matmos -- noise

Post by Zerophite » Fri Oct 11, 2002 11:27 pm

I'm not sure anyone in this forum will like this stuff, more than likely.. you won't.

I don't know what happened to my taste in music to transform itself into finding this form of music asthetically(sp) pleasing...something did though. I'm sure it has to do with a depression I've been in or the job I'm in, where all I hear are pounding, grinding machines all day. I've always been a huge IDM fan, since my first year of high school, but this is a section I kind of feared getting into.

It involves high tempos, glitching, layers upon layers of: noise, static, distortion you name it. Completely unphrased and atonal. I've heard the genre called noisecore, gabber, terrorcore, etc. etc. It's like, the death metal of electronica.

If anyone is interested, check out:

If there's one CD that I think you'd enjoy, it's the compilation All Tomorrow's Parties, Vol. 1. Since it has an alternate take of "In A Beautiful Place in the Country" by Boards of Canada, I wouldn't be surprised if you already have it. That said, there's a great Autechre track on there, and something by a guy named Russell Haswell that I think you'd dig. Actually, every track on this album is supurb (sic?).

Speaking of Autechre, the Grantz Graf EP is some of their best work to date. Whether this means anything coming from someone who's only heard LP5, Confield and a few of their other tracks (via mp3) is something that you'll have to judge, but I really love it. Much tighter and more focused that the meandering mess that was Confield.

Have you heard Merzbow? I have, but only in small doses, through mp3's and compilation appearances. If there's one artist who's successfully baffled and scared me away from their music, it's him. The sheer volume and frightening sounds on his tracks have left me unsure of where to go with him - I want to dive in further, but I know that I'll be in for a total thrashing when I do.

Matmos = noise? I don't think so. Maybe they rely on non-musical sounds, but they make pretty musical sounds out of them. I just got my copy of Matmos Live with J Lesser in the mail a few days ago, but I haven't listened to it through yet. You have to be in a certain mood to get into music like this, you know? I haen't been for a few days now, but I'm getting the urge to really listen to something, and I know this is one album that can't just function as background ambience. It has to be listened to.

Yeah, Matmos was a slip of the tongue there ^^;;

Gantz_Graf OWNS, very much influenced by VSnares. I actually found myself more of a Tri Repetae++ fan when it comes to Autechre though.

Merzbow....I found him on accident one time at work when I was using Napster. The only Japanese artist that has an orgasm over noise...seriously. The man finds noise and sound erotic. He's weird, and has a couple good songs, but with little variating properties. A bit too hardcore for me...
