Well crap. I just read them and realized the animated gif I sent in isn't acceptable. Sorry.

When I wrote the Acen rules I wanted to cover the ability to have uncompressed audio available. Why?

1) As much fun as it is to run the audio mixer it is more professional and consistent to control the audio levels at the source for something as important as the contest.

2) The emergency DVD backup can have audio sourced from an uncompressed source instead of recompressing mp2 everyone usually provides.

How I fucked up: Encoded MPEG-2 frames != Source file frames. I completely forgot about this "minor" issue. I guess I'm not the only one because the majority of people submitted MPEG-2 and no one wondered why I would want a wav of your source audio.

What does this file difference mean? It means the audio is skewed and does not sync. If you were to open the muxed audio and the wav file and compare them you would see one they do not match and one is longer than the other.

There is no way I can figure out to easily calculate the offset or skew and compensate. I do not have the time to examine the waveforms and manually sync all the audio. So yes this means all that beautiful pcm I had everyone upload is for all intents and purposes worthless. Unless there is some miracle tool or trick I do not know of.

The Future:

I know a lot of people don't have the functionality for stuff outside of mp2 but next year I'll make the rules indicate a muxed audio preference as the following:

1) Linear PCM
2) AC3 384 kpbs 2-channel
3) MP2 384 kpbs

I assume the audio offset isn't 1 second?
AVI and MPEG-2 files must have 1 second of black before the video starts and after.
Or the MPEG-2 is 2 seconds longer than the uncompressed PCM. This is assuming that the editor didn't add 1 second before and after to the original WAV file (they sent the original un-edited audio).

If the WAV audio waveform is stretched or shrunk compared to the muxed (MP2) audio then that's another issue altogether...
Having trouble playing back videos? I recommend: Image

That's not the issue. It has to do what happens with the video when it is compressed to MPEG-2. You cannot take the raw audio source and have it maintain sync after the MPEG-2 compression is done. The audio must be run through your MPEG-2 compression program with the video at the same time (either muxing together our outputting 2 elementary streams) or you cannot maintain sync.

I didn't think about this issue because in all honesty I never approached handling audio this way before with MPEG-2. My flaw was treating this as if I was dealing with two avi editing-codec files and this is not the case.

If you want to visually understand what happens:
Take some segment and encode it to mpeg-2 with audio. Make another copy of this by muxing the mpeg-2 video stream with the uncompressed source audio. Compare.

So, I hope you will use the muxed versions that where sent by some of us along with the wav file, cuz if the sync is screwed up, so is the video ... and it makes us look bad and not you, cuz the audiance will blame the creator ....

In other words, what are you going to do?

I won't be using the wav files since there are sync issues. If there is anything that will cause problems I contact the creator after reviewing their file. Of the 63 entries processed so far only two were MPEG-2 that did not have muxed audio.

Our equipment setup this year will once again be using a Netstream card to output MPEG-2 files. If you sent us an MPEG-2 that is the file we play.

That tech post was made for three reasons:
1) To inform everyone so hopefully someone else doesn't try this.
2) Make a stab in the dark in hopes someone knows a magic trick I don't.
3) So everyone can lolz at me.

<--- Detecting A/V sync issues since Acen 2001. *Props if you remember*
