Some MPEG-2 encoders, like Final Cut Pro, output two files, a M2V and a AIFF. You will need to mux (combine) these files together. This guide shows you how to mux on a Mac.

if possible, try to get the video to be .avi (using a lossless codec as the compressor, like lagarith or huffyuv. Uncompressed is also fine)
*if you don't know if you have huffyuv or lagarith then you probably don't. It's a quick google though

from there, you can use TMPGEnc to mux your audio and video while encoing to mpeg2.
it's free for 30 days...then you have to buy it to encode to mpeg2, but I think most cons also accept mpeg1 files.

that guide I linked to earlier can help you if you get stuck
