The first time Misa sees him, she even makes that comment. "Yagami Tsuki... what an unusual name..."
Yes, Hikari means "Light" in Japanese and "Tsuki" cannot be read like that. The author made it up.

on the topic of kanji....Im friends with the japanese foreign exchange student at my school, and I got her to show me my name in kanji, and when I looked it up on some kanji website, each symbol had a word (or words) that it stood for, as well as a letter or two......
so would "tsuki" just be PART of light's name?
whats kainda funny is that Ed's 5'6", and he's taller than me. ............and he's called short..............*sigh*

There's only one kanji for his name, no hiragana (or katakana) before or after it. So "tsuki" is his entire first name, so it really can't be read any other way. But the word "Light" aka "Raito" SHOULD be written in katakana though, since it's based on phonetics, and not a true Japanese word.Fullmetal Hottie wrote: would "tsuki" just be PART of light's name?
In reality, you're right, the author should've used the kanji for "hikari" for Light's name, then she probably could've gotten away with it. But I don't know what she was smoking that day, so now the kanji for "moon" means "light" thanks to her.

I try to write some manga myself, and something weird like that is something I would do......like "it sounds like light, but its related to the night, night=evil, so Light (yagami) =evil"

I actually liked the "Moon" and "Light" thing. It makes him unique, which is probably what the author wanted, but it isn't senseless like using the kanji for "River" and making his name read "Bullfighter".

(River kanji-->Hiragana-->bullfighter kanji??).....but probably not.
I think the moon/Light thing gives the people that superinterperet things something to do, other that try to figure out a "deeper motivation" behind Light and L's plans(JK
