Not neccesarily. All you need are the scenes you want to work with, and from there it doesn't really matter what the original anime was like, unless your aim is to follow that story. I'm a firm believer that you can get almost any anime to follow the story of almost any song. Yeah, sure, there are some that won't work without like, rotoscoping a character into an entirely new background, but most anime have more variety in scene selection than people seem to think. Sometimes the scenes are a stretch, but hey, if you want that song done and there's no anime that suits it, it works.

A mistake a lot of AMV editors make is that they interpret "lyrical
sync" to mean "show whatever is mentioned". To me it should
be "show what's going on". If the song says "he gave her a rose
and a goodbye kiss" don't just pick a scene in the anime with a
bouquet or a kiss, show a scene in which the guy gives the girl a
rose and a kiss. Of course, chances are there won't be such a
scene, but even if there is maybe the next song verse is "and he
sailed into the sunrise whilst she waved from the dock" and then
you most certainly won't find _that_ scene. An editor could of
course create those scenes, but I've noticed that such attempts
usually produce jarring results (boat sails away in the morning, cut
to girl waving from her house at night). So it's hard to do this well,
and that's the challenge. It's not an FX challenge, it's pure editing
savvy (yes, perhaps extensive masking could work, but that's
cheating from a purely editing perspective).

I don't agree with the "always", but I'll agree that sometimes the
anime can be changed to make a different story. Examples of
this are hard to find (if the song is really telling a story).

there are consequences. The three-part arc is told in three
distinct verses. Another example: go. I made an AMV to this
song a few years ago but it did _not_ match the story. Act I:
a mother and her son flee from their house trying to escape an
abusive husband. Act II: in the car he begs her to drive away
but she realizes they have nowhere to go. Act III: they return to
the house, hope is lost, the abuse continues. This song lasts
less than two minutes. Could you make an AMV which follows this
straightforward story?

Those two videos are very good, I enjoyed them immensely, thanks
for sharing them. I would not consider those narrative ballads: one
is a rather creepy description of a girl's boarding school, and
it doesn't focus on any particular event. The second is closest to
what I'm talking about, and it's impeccably made. Actually, I'll
retract what I said above: it does tell a story, albeit really
it's more about the nature of love triangles in general. I think that
in this case you really fleshed it out, though, so you anchored
what the song is describing into a really nice little tale.

1. The example would be one that was already posted in the thread. In that video, there are those three parts.
a) Characters introduced: Girl in a bar, guy walks in sits down next to her

Now this is completely different from the story of the anime, which is just that she is a friend of the other two guys, who are actually brothers.

2. That song could easily be completed with Evangelion, especially the movies. However it would not follow the story of the anime. I'm not sure if you were asking me to follow the story of an anime, and if you are, that's not at all what I said. I said you could get the anime to follow the story of the song. Anyway, Misato would be the mother and Shinji the son. There's a lot of good scenes of the two in a car in the movies with a mood of despair (both of them being depressed or angry and whatnot) that would work well. The "evil man" could be Gendo, which seems almost too obvious. Now I laughed when I saw the lyric "locked outside" and immediately thought of the masturbation scene, but I most definitely think there's enough footage to fill out the song. So the answer to your question is yes.

Indeed, and my answer to that was:

Well, it is a narrative ballad, and the video fits the humourous tone
of the song (with a not-so-humourous subject). It does as good a
job as possible editing FMA to follow what the song is saying, but
it's a bad fit. A hentai anime would have made more sense in this
case.

Surely there's something better than that, no?

on that.

Maybe, maybe not. Since this AMV does not exist the question
cannot be answered one way or another. Even it you could
shoehorn an anime into a song, though, it means little if the AMV
sucks or is laughable. But I'm not specifically asking for a "go"
AMV, this was just an example.

So far the "Date Rape" and the "Sweetest Betrayal" AMVs are
conceptually closest to what I was asking about, although the
former is mostly for laughs and doesn't work very well for me.
IcyCloud's vid is very good, I'd like to see more like that but with
more involved storylines.
