There are no rules. Just philosophies. I won't do it.

I always look up a combination beforehand. If it's been done, I don't do it. It is my view that despite what Sarah said, to me it's a golden rule thing. I know, having had it happen, that it pisses me off, so why on earth would I want to make someone else go through that? I treat others the way I want to be treated. It just seems so easy to check the catalog before you start editing.

Besides, it's not as though any particular idea is my ONLY idea. And everyone I know has a ton of ideas. Okay, so by the time I sat down to do my Ah! My Goddess video to Tal Bachman's She's So High, it was already done. Oh well, moving on. I'll do (and I did) something else.

I don't even bother looking anymore .... Because people rarely, if ever do the crazy ass things I do .... It's been a while since I haven't had to enter a song into the database.

A video isn't a PhD thesis. You're right that there are many other choices of song/anime to use though.

But really with the number of people making videos these days, I wouldn't worry if it has been done before, do what you want, have fun. As long as viewer's are not watching them back to back it will be fine.

There are many contests in other mediums that enforce ALL your source choices. All that differentiates you from other contestants is what you do with it. So go wild.

It's not like it never happens. Every single day if you check out the new vids there's at least 5 of them that have been done 900000 times already. Just do what you want to do and don't worry how much it's been done.

I try to check... and if it's been done I don't do it.

I make videos so that I have something I can watch. If something which fairly represents what I had in mind already exists, I don't see a point of wasting my time doing the same thing. If I was satisfied that the other video I found matched my idea AND was also good in terms of quality (video, audio, editing, etc.) then I just saved myself hours of work by looking at that catalogue... I'm lazy... aren't you?

most of my concepts i have thought of myself but there have been 1 or 2 cases (such as for my next amv) where i have seen a song used so awsomely that i really want to make an amv using it, maybe even with the same style it was used before. However, i never use the same anime and i try and throw my own twist onto the amv so that it has the originality factor and isnt just "(insert first amv's name) reborn"

If it was me, where I had an idea where the combination had been done before, I'd just make the video regardless. I'd watch it after making my own.

Thanks everyone for your input! Thankfully I haven't watched the other version, so I may just go ahead and do it, watch the other afterwards, and that way at least I know I haven't been influenced. I may not post it, but at least it'll be good practice for me, and be something I enjoy watching.

Thanks again.

Correct.

My first: "Whistle Stop", the Theme to Diseny's Robin Hood

My Second: "Theme to Buffy the Vampire Slayer" by Nerf Herder.

My new one: "In the land of the pig, the butcher is king" by Meatloaf.

No really; Disney, Nerf Herder and Meatloaf. Not exactly "most used" material!
