Good Codec to use..

Post by ronyap » Sat Mar 10, 2007 8:48 am

Hi,

I am trying to create an AMV, but I know that Video editting programmes do not like Xvid/Divx. So, I have to re-encode my vids. So I tried Lagarith, but 20secs come out to be 85 mbs. Which is quite big. I was wondering if this is what happens to youse out there, and if there is a better codec with good quality and compression AND can be editted with a prog like Sony Vegas.

Thanks

Yes that actually normal for lagarith to create large files, be thankful that vegas loves lagarith, because huffyuv has even larger file sizes.
You shouldn't sacrifice your visual quality by compressing to save HD space.

What you could do is pick which footage you want in Virtualdubb and just make a bunch of small lagarith files instead of encodeing the whole lot.
new banzors in the making :p

the tradeoff for quality is disk space - there is no way around it if you want the best looking footagee for your amv.

there are workarounds to working with lossless codecs like the bait and switch method or frameserving your dvd rips through avisynth that you might want to look into.

I haven't really worked with Vegas aside from a trial but i did notice if you want to work with divx\xvid encoded files you can get them to work with little trouble if you change the fourCC to " DIVX " instead of " XVID" or "DV50" ect a quick google for " fourCC changer " should get you a prog that can change the fourCC

Well, if this is what happens to all you people who make AMVs, then I wont mind then ^^. Ill just have to compress it after. I hope that I dont run out of HD space along the way :S.
