WMM: HELP!!! - Codec problem

you can get the programs you need in the AMVAPP

id recommend installing the app... (everything but FFDshowthingy, the one in the app is pretty buggy, and the Premeire plug ins, as youre not using premeire... you can easily uncheck them in the instalation process...)

Yes, I've posted that Vdub doesn't want to help me either.

And btw - I'm still getting this "Invalid session" message when I post. I just logged out and logged in again. It's getting harder and harder to post here...

click on the gspot pic in my sig to go download it.
it will tell you what codec your file is encoded with

Ok, I've dl'd GSpot. I've dl'd Combined Community Codec Pack, FFShow, DVD Decryptor, and Xvid. WMM still won't let me import my avis. Circuit City says I might have a virus and I should bring it in. What do I do next, please? I really wanna be able to amv again..............

Thanks for all your help so far, I'm glad you guys are so willing to try and help me out. I'll try anything if I can get it working again.

Would it help if I quoted the error message? Doesn't seem to say much. On the upside, there are a few amvs I can view now I wasn't able to before.

Um, so after you installed GSpot and used it on your video file, what codec did it say it was encoded with?

Under Video it says-

Div 3,
Divx3 Low Motion

Stat: 2 compatible codecs installed.

I can *view* avis, but they refuse to import....

Error Message:

The file D:\filename.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

Before, it was saying something about, I hadn't checked the "Check for codecs" box in options. So I did, and ever since I've been getting this message.

that's because of the codec that you used.
from what I've read before, it's an illegal version of a divx release.

very few editing programs will work with divx or xvid (x.264 should be added to this list too)

try opening it in virtualdubmod again, if you get an error try openening the file using avisynth. go here if you don't have avisynth
your avisynth script would look something like this

directshowsource("path to file.avi")

or

Code: Select all

avisource("path to file.avi")

bottom line, you're going to have to re-encode your video, preferably with a lossless codec like lagarith
probably the easiest way is to use vdubmod to do that
