What it is: So some of you may remember the RDS vs. BSP Iron Chef Tournament from around 2 years ago. Well, I decided to host yet another studio vs. studio contest, and the two most obvious contenders were CDVV and VNS. If you have absolutely no idea what this whole thing is about, here's a basic rundown.
An AMV Iron Chef match is where (usually) 2 editors go head to head and they have a limited amount of time (normally 2 hours) to create an original music video using predetermined sources. The videos are then judged, voted on, and the winner is announced.
Got it? Alright. Here's the precise rules.
Source Selection: Each editor is to select 6 sources. A source is defined by a SINGLE DVD (or single video game). Meaning, not Cowboy Bebop, but Cowboy Bebop Vol. 3. Not the Final Fantasy series, but Final Fantasy 8. Understand? You put together your list of 6 sources. Here's an example list:
1) Ergo Proxy Vol. 1
2) Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
3) Ah My Goddess TV Vol. 3
4) Burst Angel Vol. 2
5) Serial Experiments Lain Vol. 1
6) Interstella 5555
24 hours before the tournament (sometime on Friday night), we will all meet up together on AIM and go into an AIM chat room. In the AIM chat room, I can roll a virtual dice with a specified number of sides. So in essence it works as a random number generator. For each pairing I roll 2 6-sided dice. The number that comes up for each person is the source you have to work with. You then have 24 hours to rip, prepare, watch, do whatever you want with your footage.
BTW, regulations on source are: no hentai, no live-action, no American cartoons.
Tip for picking source: It's really best to select sources that are really versatile. Meaning, because you have no idea what the music is going to be, you wouldn't want to pick sources that you think you couldn't edit a drama video to, or action video to, or whatever. Obviously I understand that if you don't have a lot of source to begin with, this can be kind of hard, but try and make a good varied list. PRO TIP: DVDs that have recap episodes are gold mines, since you then get some of the best scenes from the first half of the show.
The Match Begins: 20 minutes before the match, each pair of contestents will receive a link to their song. You then have those 20 minutes to listen to your song, convert to WAV, look up lyrics, etc. Then, exactly at 9:00pm EST, your editing time begins. You have exactly TWO HOURS to edit your video.
ALSO! You CAN edit your audio (subtracting, moving things around, etc.), but that doesn't include ADDING anything to it. Meaning, you cant just paste in the waveform of a totally other song and just say "Oh, that's my audio edit".
The Match Ends: At exactly 11:00pm EST, you will stop editing, and you will begin exporting your video to Huffyuv. Once that's done, you will encode to a high quality XviD or H.264 or whatever and you will upload to the server I will have provided to you. I will rename each of the videos to be something anonymous, and then the video links will be sent to the judges. The judges will review the videos, relay their votes to me, and I will post the winners in a new thread.
How a studio wins: There are 3 potential outcomes for doing a tournament like this:
1) One studio wins it all in Round 1
If all the members of one studio win in the first round, the tournament is over, and that studio is the winner.
2) One person wins and the other three lose in Round 1
In this case, lets say that Ileia wins her match, but FallChild, Haunter, and Kitsuner all lose. She will then have to choose who she will go up against next of the remaining VNS competitors (Kisanzi, Kristyrat, and SenshiMamoru). If she wins that next match, she then has to pick another remaining VNS member. If she wins that match, she then must go against the final remaining person. If she manages to win there, CDVV will win, but if she loses VNS wins. Simple, right?
3) Two people from each studio wins
This is the most preferred route, because then it goes into a bracketed tournament style. Two new matches will be made from the 4 remaining winners, and then the winners of those matches will go against eachother to determine the final winner.
So that's pretty much all there is to it. If there are any other questions, feel free to ask. Have fun!!
