Wait for Makoto Shinkai's new film to come out. (5 centimeters per second) It's being made in HD and is going to result in a very very pretty drama spam.

As long as they are encoded like that I wouldn't mind.
Game opening with Makoto Shinkai animation.

I've not had any experience with the upscaling of footage to HD...but I wanted to try this (not neccessarily going to HD, but maybe just changing aspect ratio) using pan & scan for a vid...Kare Kano as the source. Anybody have experience doing this/could offer pointers? (mainly anything that definately didn't work so I know not to go there in my experimentation) I'm hoping (I've not tried it yet) that I can resize and filter using AE and get a decent cleaned output.

Maybe not HD, but my latest is 1280 x 720 (much to the dismay of several people, so I later found out
)

Actually the first time I watched it I didn't even realize it was HD. Not really sure if it benefitted or not, but it didn't hurt anything so eh.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

very little anime is going to benefit from HD. The fact is unless it is on film with a damn good master (most anime has poorly preserved masters and even films like Akira have major artifact issues despite cleaning up in 2001) or is made digitally in recent years is really going to benefit at all.Otohiko wrote:Actually the first time I watched it I didn't even realize it was HD. I mentioned Shinkai because all factors are pointing toward that one being done in high def. He's also known as an animation wiz and is very big on asthetics. The detail in the promo shots will look gorgeous. Gonzo and Production IG are also likely candidates to go to HD pretty early. Gonzo was amongst the first to even produce digital anime as well as among the earlier ones to do 16x9 in television shows. Both are major companies that would have the resources and desire to push the technical envelope.
I think we are a few years away from seeing widespread HD anime.
On the plus side, anime upscales a hell of a lot better than live action and so unless the source is ridiculously old and grainy it is going to look pretty decent. It just won't get the benefits of HD.
