I have a well-developed habit of being very critical of the videos I watch. By 'very' I mean 'extremely harsh'. While useful sometimes (like when dealing with Bakadeshi's spelling), sometimes it's not well-received. I try to avoid doing this to my friends, for obvious reason. Well, unless they ask for it, which a few of them do.
Why? Several reasons. One is that I'm a perfectionist. A second is that the atmosphere here is conducive to it. We are, in general, willing to give and take criticism. Third, I like helping people. This doesn't always intersect with being nice, mind you. I enjoy seeing people take the advice I give them and use it to make something better.
On hosatchel, I suspect the atmosphere is dramatically different. People are less inclined to take criticism and less likely to internalize it. The result is what we get.

i suspect that if you want con crit the best thing you can do is find an editor you respect and ASK for con crit... you cant wait for it to fall in your lap.Kalium wrote:On hosatchel, I suspect the atmosphere is dramatically different. I was joking when I said that. I usually try and help newbs, that is unless it's the newbs over at youtube. If it sounds like I'm suggesting that they are not that good, they delete my comments.cyberbird05 wrote:I'm not talking about you x_ref I'm talking to that other guy, g something, I understand where you guys are coming from, I've gotten good ratings on yt for amvs that I've put little effort into and it sux cause no one will help you or give you there input on how you can improve.

sorry T-T I see what you're saying , and yeah a lot of newbs do take offense to constructive crit. I've seen some amvs that nearly put me to sleep and yet have like 15 ratings of a perfect score. But at the same time there are amvs I have here where I put little effort into and there doing much better than the amvs where I've put a lot of time and effort into.x_rex30 wrote:I was joking when I said that. Also, the rate of good videos to poor on youtube is grossly disproportionate. Furthermore the good videos that are on there are harder to find (here you ca check the forums, popular lists on the filters, contests etc etc). After talking with a number of people who only watched AMVs on tube I dicovered that that was the only place they knew of them and relatedly thought all amvs were poor as a result. What is lost here then if they only view them on youtube is that they lose the comparison available elsewhere so what might be bad is seen as good by comparison. Furthermore, a lot of these users seem to be the same people uploading all of naruto to the site so it's rather clear what type of videos they are looking for.

The highest rated AMV's are the cutsie sailor moon type videos. They make me want to puke, but if I wanted fame and fortune on this Forum, I would have to really really really get in touch with my feminie side. Start cuddling with your friends and having pillow fights in your undergarments because that is the only way to start making high rated AMV's. Goes to show that women watch more anime than guys and you have to please them to get good ratings.

do you want to be popular? or
popular with the girls? XD
I think what youre talking about depends on what crowd you talk to... (sounds like you have been around too many fangirls... though pillow fights are fun, you gotta admit)...
-if you hang out/talk to people in the crowd that goes gaga over sparkley crap, then yea, of course if you edit that sparkley crap well then people will admire you for that... and of course several people who like that sort of stuff will find that "zomg Magical Girl + Transformation/Attack + random song = awsum" in their eyes.
-if you hang around the action, muscles and kickass crowd then you will find that they seem the more popular type of video... and in effect they will be the ones to create the "random fight + Song = awsum"
they have those kinds of "cliques" over on the tube site too... (and you know some guys actually like watching those nude transformation sequences... i wonder why)
~~~~~~~~
on THIS forum (a-m-v.org) to become "well known" all you have to do is stick around and post long enough for people to remember your name...
and on this site I have found that what truely makes a "popular video"(or gets higher ratings) is an attention to detail, something that is emotional on some level (weather it be emo, drama, fun, exciting, dance, comedic or whatever, it moves a person emotionally in some way), a good song, great concept, well excecuted, and a good (and it helps to be also well known) anime.
~~~~~~~~
either way, just about everyone enjoies a bit of eyecandy, that just cant be helped XD (i guess it depends on what they think of as eye candy O.o)
and I'll bet you that MOST of the people that make girley videos are infact girls...

Shouldn't that be the basis for making an amv in general?
