Looking for a drama song. Any ideas are welcome.

Post by Chaos Angel » Wed Oct 09, 2002 2:01 pm

I have been running into problems while planning out a video I would like to do. I am planning a drama video, and I was thinking of using Ever Free by Ayumi Hayasaki. The problem is, I want to make some strong clip-lyric syncs to help the clips show the background of the character, but I don't speak Japanese, and I don't think I should make lyric syncs that rely on someone knowing the translation of the song's lyrics. Although I feel that Ever Free's music is practically perfect in terms of mood and tone, I would like to be able to do some strong clip-lyric syncs to heighten the mood of the video, and I can't do that with Ever Free.

Rather than simply tell you the character I intend to focus the video on, let me describe her. That way, maybe it will give some ideas of good songs that would fit what I am looking for.

Her village was destroyed when she was a small child, and she was the sole survivor. She was found and adopted by someone, and over time, they became lovers. The man was later killed, and she was left all alone again. When he was revealed to be alive, she was forced by one of the man's enemies to kill him, or she herself would undergo a fate worse than death. She attacked him, however, not because of the threat, but because he had found another woman. During the course of the battle, the man realized that she wasn't trying to win; she was trying to die rather than face life with his blood on her hands. The man then allowed himself to be killed to save her life.

That, in essence, is her background.

Any ideas for a song with lyrics that would fit this kind of character, and whose music has a similar mood to Ever Free?

Here is a link to this excellant song, so you can get some idea of what I am talking about.

Ever Free

Thanks!!

Hmm.. I had this similar idea to this same song. Weird o.O Anyways, about your translation problem there, relying on the lyrics probably won't help you since you'd either have to subtitle it or just post the lyrics in the comments. Basically, what I'm saying is that it's almost nearly impossible for the viewer to truely understand the video without some sort of effort from there part to follow along with the lyrics which detract much from the video watching experience. I've seen foreign songs work well with AMV before, such as theose made by Melezov, but those were mostly upbeat and lyric syncing didn't really have much to do with the video. As for drama videos with foreign songs where the video ties in with the lyrics very deeply, I feel that it is much harder to pull off.

Anyways, you already knew that. What I'm trying to get at is, don't make the video to please everyone else. Use that song (a great song indeed) to convey your original idea. Don't settle for something 'similar' because you will always regret not doing it the way you wanted to. Basically, make the video for yourself first, then if others can understand the video on your level with some effort on their part, I feel that the connection would be much greater. Then again, that's just me rambling..

I agree completely. I am not looking for anyone else's message or anyone elses' inspirations. Quite simply, I feel that the video I am envisioning would work better with lyric syncs. When I listen to the song, I can feel the mood, feel the tone, but it's hard to draw up the imagery to go along with what I am feeling. I can see vague impressions for some parts, and maybe one or two small portions I have a good, solid idea of what I want to do with it. The rest is just an artistic blur. I think that if I can, somehow, find a song with similar tone and mood, and where the lyrics create a very strong emotional response, then it would work better.

I have tried looking for other songs on my own, but have not had any luck. So, I decided to come here and see what other people have to say.

Oh, and I agree that songs in foreign languages are hard to work with. That's part of my problem!! ;)

BTW, some other good videos that use foreign songs, if you're interested, are William Milberry's House on the Moon, Justin Emerson's Blue and, of course, Kevin Caldwell's Engel.

Good luck with your video, BTW.

I didn't say I was actually working on making the vid, just that I had the same idea :P

If I find anything I'll post it :D
