As of right now, not that I know of. The reports I read about the Air Blu-ray release is that the company upscaled their production copy for it. The only way would be to get captures from Japanese HDTV broadcasts, but many of the ones that people run across purporting to be such are really just upscales. A few though, like Galaxy Angel II (at least the huge-ass 700-800 MB raws I've been seeing of it, anyway), I think can be safely assumed to really be broadcast in true HD rather upscaled, due to the lack of upscaling artifacts like broken lines.Keeper of Hellfire wrote:And as second thought - is there really that much real HD-anime out? I mean that one released by the companies, not fan-made upscaled DVD-rips.
I'm going to be working on a 720p short video, but then again it'll be with stills from Ina-koi!, which are 1600x1200 (which really surprised me and is what pushed me to try this in the first place). I could feasibly make a 1080p vid out of it, but that would require some inventive ways of concealing the parts of the canvas the image wouldn't cover (if I was going to go for the full widescreen effect of 1920px width, anyway; 4:3 HD content isn't very common, but that's perfectly do-able with the source if I felt so inclined). It'll actually be released as part of a compilation with the full 720p version of it as an embedded attachment.

As for the question of anime being released on the new HD release formats (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray), so far the only ones to actually be released are Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (Blu-Ray) and Brave Story (both formats). Another "pseudo-anime" called Project PAPO was also released on Blu-Ray, but again, it's not something most people would consider traditional anime.
Air is being released this month as well, and I too have heard rumors about it being an upscale, but I will wait and see actual example shots before I make judgement

10 bucks says Makoto Shinkai's (Guy who did Hoshi no Koe and Beyond the Clouds) new film is going to be HD and will produce HD drama spam because anything less would do it injustice. http://5cm.yahoo.co.jp/gallery/index.html Just look at the screenshots.... and tell me you DON'T want to see this in high def.
And honestly msot anime we won't ever see high def quality with because of how it is produced. Certainly nothing from the cel and film era. Everything for quite some time is going to be an upscale. Kinda dissapointed if Air is one since that actually would be one of the shows that I would have expected to have been made in high def.
But I expect some of the major studios known for really good CG such as Production IG and Gonzo to end up with true HD. Films for sure... and gradually more and more tv shows. But for awhile it will only be the high budget ones.
And seriously why would we need high def for Naruto anyway?

I highly disagree. That is like arguing DVD vs VHS. There is a lot of noticeable killed detail in a lot of anime, and that's a fact. When DVD first came out people would say there isn't much of a difference between VHS and DVD. But you mainly heard that when it first came out. Just wait till some good releases come out, that would shut people up. And I don't see a reason why they can't make it easy to edit with. The files are not as huge as uncompressed files, and those files work perfectly for editing with. And since hd is suppose to be progressive(I think) you wont have to put deinterlacing scripts that slow down video playback. I can see it working out someway. I'm addicted to hd especially with my gears of war on my hdtv. We need more damnit! And I must say hddvd and blue ray really sucked at marketing it. There is a clear victory for hd dvd. There is a lot that could be done to increase sales, like more software, hacks etc for hd dvd. Everyone nowadays seem to have 720p or higher hdtvs so I'm sure people are looking for a better movie experience. I think that qualifies as them being ready.Streicher wrote:HD is quite useless for about every anime show released until now.
The demand on the PC performance for editing/encoding/playback(!) just does not justify with the slight image quality improvement. Anime is just not detailed enough to need those high resolutions.
What kinda makes sense to me is to use HD RAWs instead of SD RAWs and scale them down to SD for release.
