You're still using some funny expressions. I don't think you understand the difference between WMP and MPC.
Note that this entire post will not make any practical difference in your life.
Windows Media Player is exactly what it sounds like: a program that plays media files for Windows. It comes with Windows and is developed by Microsoft.
Media Player Classic was not developed by Microsoft. It's a third-party player, like VLC, Winamp, BSplayer, Zoomplayer, RealPlayer, Songbird, Mplayer and many others. The name is "Media Player Classic" because the GUI was designed to look like the old versions of Windows Media Player (before WMP 7.0) and give it a retro look (which is why it's called Media Player Classic).
As for your error, it's probably a WMV9 file, which is why WMP plays it and MPC doesn't.

MPC plays WMV files just fine. It relies on DirectShow just the same as the regular Windows Media Player series does, but is a lot more stable and includes some internal filters that don't require DirectShow (splitters and a few decoders) - if WMP can play WMVs, so can MPC (as well as WMP6.4 - mplayer2.exe, which can still be found in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player along with whatever later version of WMP you've installed). I actually use MPC for WMV files 99% of the time because you can actually seek and don't have to bother with waiting for that damn buffering screen.Gepetto wrote:As for your error, it's probably a WMV9 file, which is why WMP plays it and MPC doesn't.

Yes, but when WMP does that thing where it automatically downloads codecs, aren't they internal decoders, as in "not effective with any other player"?

To be honest, the automatic codec download thing never worked for me, so I wouldn't know if they're internal or not, but as far as codecs go I do know that installing the newest version of WMP will enable playback of the corresponding WMV codec(s) through WMP6.4 and MPC - i.e. installing WMP9 or WMP10 will enable the use of WMV9 or WMV9.1, respectively, through DirectShow. Protected streams, on the other hand, can only be verified by playing them in the new versions of WMP.Gepetto wrote:Yes, but when WMP does that thing where it automatically downloads codecs, aren't they internal decoders, as in "not effective with any other player"?
As far as I know even the newest versions of WMP don't necessarily have any built-in splitters or decoders, but still rely on the ones the system has access to - they just do so really poorly compared to 6.4 and other DirectShow players.

I had the same problem with you
. At that time, i install Classics, satsuki codec, and it worked ok. But then i use CCCP and i think it crashed codecs. Everytime i close mpc i got a error message.
I fixed by uninstall all of them, set WMP for wmv, wma only. And then install MPC, then cccp, while install cccp, choose "default setting", and it work ok.
