just finished Scrapped Princess

i was very impressed with this series. the amv from AX this year turned me onto it, and i just loved it. it has a great balance of drama, action, innocent comedy and romance. it's the best i've seen since fullmetal alchemist. and actually has a similar feel to it.

i guess the best way to describe this series is a "feel good drama".

Image
Pacifica, the heroine of the series, is taken in by Shannon and Raquel's parents when she was a baby, and the two are now sworn protecters of her as the scrapped princess. the relationship between the three is quite touching. even at times when Pacifica appears to have a crush on her adopted brother, Shannon himself is very protective over her.

and then you have the wannabe knight, Leo, who falls in love with Pacifica the minute she meets her. this goofball may seem like just comic relief, but has a big heart and actually comes in handy in several situations.

this mixture of loveable characters offsets the antagonists (who aren't just on a blind rampage but actually hold some ground) perfectly. it made me cry at several points, and i cracked up at tons of one-liners.

unlike a lot of animes, the ending is an actual conclusion. it doesn't leave you hanging, or in a place where you don't want it to be, like thinking the series is supposed to continue.

if you have seen the series, please feel free to submit your own comments and additions. just be careful of revealing spoilers ;)

i give this series 4/4 stars.

True, but there isn't a Scrapped Princess thread in Anime Series Discussion. I just searched. Unless they used a different romanization.

I'm kinda glad it's not only me seeing a Fullmetal-ish tinge to Scrapped Princess, apart from the animation, of course. (Or the other way around, I guess. SP is older, as far as I know.) The humor is less wacky - there's no SD in this series, none - but it's drama with heartwarming elements, and the major theme is a family trying to stick together. Both are not particularly common elements that it shares with FMA.

It actually reminded me very strongly of the cRPG Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, except that SP was more coherent. ;) (And also older, so again, it's more like SO3 resembles SP.) Its use of the fantasy look is very Final Fantasy / cRPG-esque, although it takes the themes in a different direction than they usually do.

I do wonder why nobody watched this series - apart from a few mentions when it was still in fansub - and only, like, two people made AMVs from it. Kind of a shame; it's a nice solid series, and its weird ending is interesting and doesn't come off as randomly gratuitous.

I'd have to agree that it has some unusually nice closure for an anime ending. Partly due to the way the story is structured - it has a "mystery" that is introduced, explained, and resolved over the course of the series. Plus a coda to settle in the "what happens next."

I've never read the novel it was based on - I'm not even sure whether it came out in English - so that might be a function of the original story. It doesn't have "this series was based on a manga that's still ongoing, so quick, we have to fake it" syndrome.

[/yay, a chance to geek out over a series nobody watched]

it is most definately out in English
Bandai got it and released the first volume on 4/26/05

*saw it thanks to my local anime club*

it was pretty good, not my favorite, but good.
And I did like the ending, it actually makes sense (maybe that's just because my brain is messed up due to college)

i really love the relationship between pacifica and shannon. i really like raquel's ditsyness and that it's not annoying too :P

good characters and the way the react with each other is what draws me to certain animes the most. that's what makes this series so special to me.
