Re: hosatchel strikes a victory for AMVs
Eh, I don't think so. You still have the anime licensing bit to worry about.Zarxrax wrote:What makes this particularly interesting is this little tidbit: "Under the agreement, hosatchel users will have full access to videos from Warner artists. They will also be permitted to incorporate material from those videos into their own clips, which are then uploaded to hosatchel."
Now, what exactly does this mean for us? If I am understanding this correctly, if Warner posts a music video for a song on hosatchel, then you would LEGALLY be able to create an a AMV to that song and post it on hosatchel.
Of course, this does absolutely nothing for the org at the moment, but I think this is absolutely a step forward for AMVs in general.
I would also not be so optimistic about Warner Music -- they, like their other four brothers, are known to be anything but generous with their copyrights.
In particular, I am not convinced that this deal covers both audio and video, or just video; additionally, if you want to go out and use a cleaner copy (or, say, an uncut copy) of a song you find a video for on hosatchel, I am not convinced that this agreement grants those rights, either.
Anyone have an official document for this?

More generally, what is the set of transformative operations you can apply to the "material" (whatever that is) owned by Warner Music? Does it include any transformation, or a very limited set (say, only rearrangement of sampled clips (where "sampled" means, say, <= 10 sec.) played forward at full speed, with no modifications "internal" to the frame, i.e. no additional graphics work, no compositing, etc.)?trythil wrote: In particular, I am not convinced that this deal covers both audio and video, or just video; additionally, if you want to go out and use a cleaner copy (or, say, an uncut copy) of a song you find a video for on hosatchel, I am not convinced that this agreement grants those rights, either.
I'd love to find that out, but the news article doesn't point that out, and I've not found a link to any sort of legal agreement yet.

I wonder if having WB Execs/officials at Lumos (a Harry Potter convention), where I showed HP Music videos to rave reviews, had anything to do with this change?
Most likely it's do to 'Snakes on a Plane' where they are realizing how the fan market and fan voice can change and effect profits.

Although it'd be awesome if your HP MVs did have an effect, it was probably more likely to Snakes on a Plane. Hell, I wouldn't have even considered watching that movie if the fans had not made so many parodies of it before it came out. It made me go "Man, I should watch this movie so maybe I know where they're coming from" or on a better note "I need to watch this movie to see how stupid it really is."

Well, to add to Warner material authorized for use on YouKnowWhere, Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment and CBS have joined in.
I still don't know if the $1.65 billion Google spent on purchasing YouKnowWhere was a wise investment, but I suppose this could spell the end of Google Video...

I don't see how it's the end. I assume the two sites use essentially the same technology, and with all the visitors to the 'satchel Oogle just has that much more ad targeting. Probably they'll even use the same servers. I'd have thought that the bandwidth that a site like that uses would be astronomical. Apparently, I'd have thought wrong.Willen wrote:I still don't know if the $1.65 billion Google spent on purchasing YouKnowWhere was a wise investment, but I suppose this could spell the end of Google Video...
On the other hand it's good to see that fanmade stuff strikes a victory for a change. I guess the big studios would rather people watch crappy little 120x120 pixelated videos, than download perfect pirated copies. Bout time.

If it were anyone but google making this buy I'd be a lot more concerned, but even as it is, google now controls a estimated 56% of the video market.
