  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

Looking for Criticism!

Post by taineyah » Sat Sep 23, 2006 11:06 pm

I have just completed my first AMV, Goddess of Music, an Ah! My Goddess (movie)AMV set to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera.

I am looking for any and all criticisms. I am looking to begin competing, starting probably with Anime North in May (due date will prolly be in March or April) and I want to be as good as I can be, so I don't make a fool of myself!

Please, I am honestly begging, pick it apart and give me as much criticism as you can! I am looking to have it torn apart and picked at so I can improve! I am a film student, so I can take your worst and understand it!

Thank you!

rip it apart? my pleasure

I'm probably going to be making a few of refrences to software/plugins that you might not know about...unless you read the guides (EADFAG or VicBond007's guide)
so as a precaution link to EADFAG
(you may want to download the amvapp at any rate if you haven't already, because it includes so many useful programs/applications for video editng...but it's made for windows. I know there's a similar package for macs...but can't remember where it is)

that was really good for a first amv.
the first thing I have to say is that the opening was a bit long.
the typical limit is around 10 seconds, much longer and the intro seems to drag on, and it disturbs the flow of the amv.

the next thing has to do with action/editing sync. one of the things that helps a vid seem more organized and finished is to cut on the beat (or other strong musical element). Start by changing clips on the beat, then try to put some of the action in the clip on a beat (or other strong musical element).

the video looked pretty good, but there is probably a way to make it even better. Some of the edges are jagged (look at Belldandy's hair ~0:27)...the most common thing that causes this is bad resizing of the footage. This can be fixed by using a good resizing algorithm such as Bicubic, lanczos3 or lanczos4 (do this in AviSynth or VirtualDub(Mod))
Avoid resizing in an editing program, or upon exporting your amv, do it all before or after you put it into the editing program.

there's also a few plugins for avisynth that can help with jagged edges
Sangnorm and TIsophote.

There was some rainbowing and noise in the footage, the rainbowing wasn't really too bad, but the noise could have been reduced by a smoother. It doesn't look like it needed too much, but Deen probably would've done alright (at low values as to preserve most of the details).
A line sharpener (apllied after the smoother) would have helped out a bit too (not a lot, fastLineDarken would have probably been enough)

The aspect ratio looked a bit off too. The Movie is widescreen IIRC...so a widescreen resolution shouldn't be letterboxed imo (then again I've never worked with anamorphic widescreen footage).

A solid theme can help make a vid feel more organized, but don't try to force it. I feel that footage making Celestian look more evil would have been fitting for this song, another thing I would have focused on a bit more is the conflict between Celestian and Keiichi.

A point in the music where there is a big change should also reflect something of a change in the video. at ~1:06 when the vocals change to the man's voice would have been an opportune time to shift from Belldandy's point of view to Celestian's point of view (it still felt like Belldandy's POV to me)

Try to avoid really long clips with not much going on, and avoid using a clip more than once if at all possible.

Not all clips should have hard cuts between them, ~2:52-3:05 would have been a place to consider using a transition (like fade clip A into clip B)

If you're going to attempt lipsync (~3:04) avoid lip movement when there is no speaking. There's a guide to this too

Other than that...I don't think there's much more to say atm.

Thank you very much! I'm not sure about the programs that you recommended, as I am using a Mac, but I thank you for all of the criticism! I will be keeping it in mind when I do my next one!
