I don't want to speak for the others, but I would venture 99.9% of the footage comes from retail DVDs (domestic and/or imported).

There are other ways to obtain footage, but in the end, not only are they illegal -- depending on the country you may live in -- But, also the quality and format the sources come in is usually less than ideal for editing in NLE programs like Vegas, or Premiere due to how they are distributed using compression codecs.

In the past?
We used to get our sources from P2P or direct downloads.
Now we buy DVDs because of the quality. Just works better...

I get them the illegal way. I hold up the video store and rob them at gun point.

Hey, robbing em at gun point and the most common online illegal way are pretty similar, you are stealing in both cases. If you wouldn't shop lift a DVD then why get it via other means (you know what I mean).

Most video sources come from anime DVD's that have been released lincesed domestically to ensure best quality picture and technically aspects.

In the US, so is ripping DVDs.*

* if you have to circumvent a copy protection scheme to do it, which is almost always true of modern DVDs.
