Youtube strikes a victory for AMVs
From a story posted on slashdot today, "Warner Music has agreed to make its library of music videos available to YouTube, marking the first time that an established record company has agreed to make its content library available to the user-generated media company."
What makes this particularly interesting is this little tidbit: "Under the agreement, YouTube users will have full access to videos from Warner artists. They will also be permitted to incorporate material from those videos into their own clips, which are then uploaded to YouTube."
Now, what exactly does this mean for us? If I am understanding this correctly, if Warner posts a music video for a song on youtube, then you would LEGALLY be able to create an a AMV to that song and post it on Youtube.
Of course, this does absolutely nothing for the org at the moment, but I think this is absolutely a step forward for AMVs in general.

More accurately, this reduces the number of legal weakpoints by one: US licensors and/or original creators of the anime involved would still be able to clamor against it. However, the incidence of this is a lot less frequent, so yes, the major problem has been cleared....at least at this one site.Zarxrax wrote: If I am understanding this correctly, if Warner posts a music video for a song on hosatchel, then you would LEGALLY be able to create an a AMV to that song and post it on hosatchel.

Shin Hatsubai is a Premiere-free studio. Insomni-Ack is habitually worthless.

While the "free promotion" angle is pretty self evident, I'd like to think this is a first step in establishing a "read-write" Internet Community, as discussed by Prof. Lawrence Lessig at LinuxWorld. Creation inspired and built on previous works can only lead to an explosion of possibilities, just as we have with the AMV community.SOAD2k8 wrote:*applaudes WB*. It's nice to see that there are sensible people out there in the music industry that realize that fan made videos (in our case AMVs) are a great source of free promotion, a lesson that anime creators have known for a long time now.

Double yay. But if I make videos with WB music, and upload them anywhere other than YeTubeth (here, for example) is it still illegal? (not counting the illegal use of the anime, just the music)

There are a couple major questions that stem from this. Among them are "how much is Warner getting?" and "can hosatchel afford to cut similar deals with the other major labels without going broke?"
The real surprise here is just how long it's taken for a major label to wake up and smell the coffee. Expect to see Universal and such less than thrilled with this move.

her videos has thousands (if not millions by now) of views but only a couple of comments... theres no way she could have so few comments with so many views... her comments are screened... and only a couple were "nice" im guessing... its almost sad...devilmaykickass wrote:Nothing is free.JaddziaDax wrote:and this is why Paris Hilton has her own "tube channel"
