I don't even use vegas but it seems to be the best choice for people new to the amv path. It gets you into the swing of video editting and its easy to use. Even after you've learned the program you can still get more creative with it, using plugins and stuff just like other programs.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

I used to use the free version of this. If you use Virtual dub to add on large black borders to your clips then their logo will be in the border and not your AMV. They you can just cut off the borders and have a logo free AMV.
