i built a 1 ghz amd athalon comp last december just to host files for my network.. cause im cheap.. the comp was like $80, with a free case... i put in a dual layer dvd burner $80, 2 200 gig WD Hd's *i had them laying around* and 1 120 gig Seagate $80 on sale. everything else is stock... and i have edited on that comp many times with very little problem... *made 2 vids on it using just after effects*

right now im using a laptop i bought for $450 at a pawn shop... the guy was pissed off because it froze up on him and he had to pay like $100 to get it working again... he wanted $500 for it, but i said something about it freezing and it didnt have a laptop bag *like $20 at walmart for a bag... and i dont even care...* so he dropped the price for me... i got it home, cleared off all of the programs that were fucking it up.... didnt reformat it, and it hasnt froze yet... granted its only a 1.9 ghz 64 bit amd sempron... and an E-machine at that... with 40 gig hard drive, and 512 megs of ram... it works great though... i can get about 3 hours of battery life... i can edit like mad *although the space i have is limited, but what i do is i put my vob files on my 1ghz comp, then i make the d2v/avs/fake avi's over the network, and they edit just fine in premiere and after effects..

so you can get a REALLY cheap comp, and even though it might not be the fastest you can edit on it... *i didnt have to wait much on my 1ghz...* but if you wanna spend a lot on a comp and want to edit like mad... be my guest... just makesure you ask yourself.. is it worth what im going to spend on it?

Well I'm out to go DVD studio on a few old home movies and play a few games too. It really on takes a bunch of RAM to edit video for AMVs, well, maybe not that much.

What I think is funny is that with all Joe88's power he only has a Floppy drive. (List was missing the drives.....I hope.)

That old Compaq overheated to death from not having any fan at all of any type, aside from the power supply which didn't cool much other than the supply itself.

They had one of those heat spreaders (I forget what they are called.) to increase surface area glued (swear it looked like Elmer's school glue) stuck right on the Processor.

Well actually I already have brand new Sony DVD-RW 16x, and a Sony DVD-ROM 52x with me me now, still in the boxes

As for HD , I have 2x 120GB that will go right to that comp
I found a way online where you dont have to reformat to bring a local driver such as C:// with windows installed to boot with the new comp fine without any errors

I have those parts already so I dont need to buy them

though I might buy a 300GB SATA HD...

dang...
copper cooling base+copper heatpipe+big fan

I couldn't justify buying one...that's about as much as I paid for my cpu (when it retailed for $327...got it for $285), mobo ($115, retail =$135 back then) and psu (paid $90...retail)
I like ebay (only got my case off of ebay). I was a risk, but being careful w/buyers saved me about $200 on my build

I'm more of an Amazon fan, but eBay is nice for some things even if is kind of a world wide garage sale.

Not bad Joe88, I always thought you had format to install a HDD. Windows is full of loop holes though. Impressive system. Is it running an atomic telescope?

Any truth to AMD overheating more than Intel? (Though I've heard AMD to be more stable.)

when compared to other cpus of it's time, the athlon 64 line ran much cooler than their intel counterparts (especially the p4)

now that microsoft has migrated to a 65nm process, their cpus take up less power and generate less heat (compared to athlon64 (s939 and AM2) which still uses 90nm)

I thought it was due to surface area to release heat. AMD being smaller has less area.

Yeah P4 had the benefit of some automatic limiter in case of heat trouble to reduce power (and performance). It needed it badly though to keep from bursting into flame.
