Ever since the list was expanded to include Sentimental and Instrumental (and whatever else they added), I've been of the opinion that that should be changed to picking no more than 4.

no wait, that's an emu! But is it displaying emo? Maybe it's comedic? If it ran around, would it be action?

well I'd say for a contest that its even more obvious what you should pick for your amv. For me I would want it to be instrumental, since there isn't an instrumental category then I'd go for the next best one which is drama. Duh you pick the one you would like your amv to win in or think it stands the best chance. If it has a little of the other categories in it, then it's all the more interesting to watch. You people are making to big of a deal out of this.

Pick the one you would like to see it win in, stands the best chance in. (Isn't that obvious?)
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

Honestly, I would say that regarding conventions that in a case where comedy is involved to any great extent and it is known to be fan judge it ususally belongs in comedy. Even in peer judging you are seeing that as it depends on who is judgin. Sorry but good rule of thumb is the video that makes people laugh wins by default and it is not fair to other vids competing in say romance or action.

Of course yeah you can go for the easy win and submit it as the alternative and most contests won't move it, but I think eventually such moves will be looked poorly upon by editors because you'll see people who care about winning trying to toss in a few gags into their action video or romance or drama vid so that they can win over a more traditional video.

As far as the org goes, as many categories that reasonably fit should be fine. It's just a label for people to look at.

life's not fair....

but yea id probably vote for the one that made me laugh the most unless it sucked... though i notice even sucky "comedies" (if you want to even call it comedy) will win some fan votes just cause they use "gag jokes" and a popular anime :/

Yep... people vote for comedy over anything else. The cheaper the gag the better. A better made video that sticks to being a drama or romance or action vid will lose out becuase people like to laugh.

And even if things are not perfectly fair, some sense is in order. If you deliberately build gags into your vid it is making a comedy. Comedy is often one of the smaller categories in any contest without the miscategorizations.

See the thing is I don't make videos that I intend to be multi category, it just sort of happens with the evolution of the video. My Amadeus video, because the music changed in tone so does the video. So then trying to put into one category is diffecult.

I think the idea that if a video makes people laugh it's comedy, is wrong. I have videos that make people laugh but I didn't attend for them to be that way. Some people think lip synch = comedy regardless of content. (Shrugs)

no lip synch= comedy is not accurate. That is the one case wher I do not get how audiences will laugh desite the content. I mean in hybrid in the sense that its an action video that also happens to have deliberate jokes built into it. That's just frankly, a very immature audience. I groan when you hear the laughter in an inappropriate situation

However if you look at the video and find yourself laughing through half of it, it is probably best suited for comedy. If you show it to your friends and they chuckle and tell you 'that video was hilarious' then it's a comedy. You might have some elements of toehr categories but since it dominantly makes people laugh it should compete in that category.

Obviously the issue comes in contests on how they fare together. Not a big issue if both compete on equal ground. However my point remains that you can do a much more mediocre video, throw several silly gags into it and enter it as an action or romance and you will win over someone who attempts any type of storytelling with their video. And blipvert vids will triumph over any other comedy and again needs to be made half as good as another comedy video to be deemed worthy.

Lipsynch absolutely kills serious dramma in the minds of some... It's usually something you don't just throw in at some point - that said, i've seen such things do well on a comedy factor (audiance reaction suggested they definately didn't vote for the best video in the category, but rather the one that made them giggle a bit).
