Anime where a/the main character is slowly dying?

Any suggestions of an anime (movie or series) where the main character (or at least a major one) is slowly dying throughout the series? Preferably the character in question dies, but I'll take what I can get.

The only one i can think of for now is Rurouni Kenshin 2nd OVA Reflections. ^^

Does it have to be a physical death or could it be a spiritual/emotional one?

Asuka from NGE dies spiritually in the later part of the series.

Serious spoiler alert for Hikaru no Go:

Sai from Hikaru no Go - his passing during the end of the series is beautiful and there are a large number of graveyard scenes.

Physical is preferred, as well as illness, as I wanted to kind of convey a slow deterioration throughout.
