You can order from www.cdjapan.co.jp or Amazon Japan www.amazon.co.jp
Here is the link to cdjapan: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/Listups/anime/ ... aruhi.html

As of July, the first 2 DVDs have been released. The first DVD includes the Asahina Mikuru movie. The second supposedly includes the first 2 chronological episodes. It seems that the DVDs will have the episodes in chronological order, but I'd like to confirm this.

It'll really suck if the DVD release follows the chronological. That means the newcomers will miss what makes this series unique. :?

Hopefully (though I'm not holding my breath) when some U.S. company license this, they get the Japanese licensors to let them follow the broadcast order.

Whoa... $48 US for Disc 1.

Yeah, I agree, let's hope when it comes out in America, it'll be in broadcast order.

Wait, but isn't Episodes 2 and 3 (the two after the Asahina movie) Episodes 1 and 2 chronologically? So maybe they are getting released in broadcast order and not chronological order.... it's just that these happen to be the same in this case? Or have you heard from elsewhere that they are being released chronologically?

Yeah, I was noticing the high price of the DVDs while I was bouncing around amazon.jp. I think I will just wait until there's some sort of box set over here. As opposed to spending several hundred dollars for the R2s that is.

On the plus side you can get the books for less then ten bucks a pop, if you can read Japanese that is.

I'm trying to get my hands on a Limited Edition DVD 1, but the outlook is pretty grim. Even a LE DVD 2 is probably not going to happen. I should pre-order #3 soon...

Everyone pretty much knows the popularity of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has taken on viral proportions but this is just rediculous. First identified in Japan sometime in July, 2006, 2 new computer viruses have been on the spread, using omake images from the breakout hit anime. Also known as TSPY_HARADONG.A and TSPY_DENUTARO.J, the malicious programs are usually acquired through filesharing networks or websites. In the case of TSPY_HARADONG.A it then makes a screen shot of the infected computer and saves it as a file. It up-loads file to a FTP site by using a specific user account. When executed, the program displays several different image still from the Haruhi Suzumiya TV anime. At the same time a whole host of files with popular media and web-related extensions are deleted in whatever folder the program happens to reside. Trend Micro Japan has logged descriptions of the viruses and you can view them here and here.
Source here. I blame Yuki for this!

Interesting report from Kadokawa Shoten in Otakon.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya does not currently have a distributor, but Kadokawa has received several offers from companies; Sakuda expects it to be released in the US next year. With the first volume having sold 60,000 units in Japan, it is one of the most successful anime properties currently on the market.....

....When asked about the Haruhi novels and manga, Sakuda said that the company has received offers, and there is a chance that those too will be seen next year.
Bwahahaha, every company wants a piece of Haruhiism. 8-)

I sense a battle to license this series. Considering the amount of interest from fans and the obvious web traffic TMoHS gets, I'm sure the offers started coming in fairly early. I guess that ADV inquired and Funimation probably did too. We can probably add Media Blasters and Geneon into the mix. My vote to get this is ADV, they are in need of big hit series after the loss of FMP:TSR and I think the vocal cast they have can do this justice for a dub. Plus, they do have a bit of an inside track with the Japanese companies involved in the production. But Funimation was the company that stole away FMP:TSR, so...
