So what exactly would be the ideal aspect ratio, then? And when is 720x480 acceptable? I'm no pro at this, but if I want to bump up the quality of my vids, I'll need whatever info I can get.

this: http://i6.tinypic.com/23k7tb4.jpg

as opposed to this: http://i1.tinypic.com/23k7rt0.jpg

would bother me : \

but seeing as i use VLC, and i can resize with that, i could watch it in the normal aspect ratio without being bothered too much. But that isn't the point. If yuo want to make a video, you should at least have the decency to use the correct ratio, and not make the viewer have to alter it themselves.

its a nitpick :/
it depends on who is watching it....

just like subs.... to me subs can kill a vid.... same with AR... :/

but that all depends on who is watching....

you happened to find yourself a nitpicker... but you know fix the AR next time and they wont have anything to complain about

The correct aspect ratio will depend on what your source footage is. And how you set up your video project.

For example, if you are making an AMV entirely from the TV series The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya  , it has a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. The final resolution of your video should be something like 848 x 480, 768 x 432, 720 (or 704) x 400, 640 x 352, or similar.

Now if you are using a TV series like Naruto, which is 4:3 aspect ratio (aka. "fullscreen" or "standard"), your AMV should be outputted at resolutions like 640 x 480, 512 x 384, 480 x 352, 320 x 240, or similar.

The problems arise when you try to mix 16:9 and 4:3 footage in the same video. How do you mix widescreen and fullscreen footage together without screwing up the aspect ratios of one or both of the types. Unfortunately, I've seen quite a few videos that "split the difference" and use 720 x 480, squishing the 16:9 widescreen footage and stretching the 4:3 fullscreen footage.

EADFAG has a somewhat technical explanation here: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... ocId742447 and here: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... atios.html on how to identify and combine the two properly.

x2

For me, the wrong aspect ratio will kill a video. I have a hard time seeing past the footage looking wrong to see the video behind it...

I can understand when it's someone new is getting it wrong, I messed them up at the start too, but AE's arn't very hard to learn to get properly, so if someone has been making vids awhile, then it really annoys me heh...

As Jadd said, the severity on Aspect Ratios making or breaking a vid, all depends on who it is watching ^^

Maybe he thought you'd be happier hearing about a flawed technical aspect of your vid instead of "THIS VID WAS WEAK SAUCE. BORING. 1/5."

For the record, that was not my comment. I know a lot of you would have seen that and thought, "Lol, Zero is bitching about encoding again".

I'd have replied about this sooner, but I'm still in Baltimore...

Aspect Ratio is the first thing I notice... and the first thing to outright piss me off. It' such a simple, simple, SIMPLE correction that it tends to make me dock points based on your effort score. I have VLC as well, and that's what I usually do to watch the video, but I shouldn't have to. Several videos have been made that I have been unable to get the creator to change, and I end up converting them myself, post-process, post-encode, since they are otherwise decenty videos. This is less than ideal, since you should resize in pre-process.

But is definitely the first thing I'll call you out on. It won't break the amv for me, but it does make me ask why you didn't get someome familiar with the series to review it before announcing it.
