Cookie Cutter effect in Vegas

Post by x_rex30 » Wed Jul 19, 2006 3:48 pm

I think this is a really cool effect but a few things I can't do or don't know how to do really piss me off. You could choose where you want the cut to be on the screen but you cant add an effect like make it move around and zoom the shape in or out.. i've seen this effect before but mainly in videos using AE.. is there a way to do this in vegas? I can't quite figure it out.

I'm guessing that you are using Vegas Movie Studio (the cheap version), not Vegas (the expensive version). The expensive Vegas does have keyframes for cookie cutter effects just like in that picture you posted.

Vegas Movie Studio does not do keyframes, but it does have start and end settings (i.e. effectively, a limit of two keyframes for each event).

When the FX window for cookie cutter is open, look near the top to the side of the Preset box. There's a checkbox next to the word End. When that is unchecked, your settings apply to the whole event. When that box is checked, you need to further select either Begin or End and make settings for each one.

Check the Help menu index for this topic: Animating Video FX.

Remember this is for the start/end of an event, not a clip. If you want mutliple changes within a clip, split the clip ('S' key) into more events.

You can also do cookie cutter-like effects with the color gradients. Select the Text & Backdrops tab. Drag one of the black and white presets to the Overlay track above a clip.

No I have Vegas 6.0d

the expensive version.. I've mentioned on many occasions that I have Vegas 6.0... how odd maybe the update to 6.0d did something to mess that up.

I remember you posted elsewhere about v6, but it didn't make sense that this was a problem. I'm still using version 4 and the keyframes work. In fact, I don't think there is any way to disable them.

You might check your keyframe settings to see if they haven't been set somehow to "Hold" - as unlikely as that sounds.

I don't think them being set to hold is the case.. they're set on linear. WTF!?

OK seems I fixed it.. i can see the option now.. You know how there is an option to see how much of the timeline you see?? the keyframe option was pulled all the way down and there was a bar I dragged up that revealed it... quite odd I thought I would see it by using the scroll bar but that was not the case! All seems well now.

I wish they had a "feather type" option like they have in the Mask option.

Feather type? Must be something new in v6.
You may get that option by masking with the color gradients under Media Generators. They're not as easy to use as the cookie cutter, but they are more flexible.
