Laptops and upgrading

Post by Kariudo » Mon Jul 17, 2006 1:05 am

with a few other factors helping this along, boredom spurred this question.

I have a compaq presario R4012US
AMD Athlon64 3200+ (Newcastle) S939
1GB sodimm pc2700
80GB HD
and some other things that are of little concern.

the mainboard is the generic Hewlett-Packard 8035 42.37
no luck google-ing it

this cpu is using a 130nm process, HTT of 200MHz (FSB 2000MHz), core voltage 1.5v and a 10x multiplier.

I can't help but notice the similarity between this cpu and other ones (such as a 64 4000+ or x2 3800+, although I belive the amd 64's all use 90nm processes now).

given that I can take apart my laptop (and I have...to some extent) would I be able to use a newer/better cpu?
(I have the latest cpu-z, but not many more tools like it)

thanks.
I'm trying to avoid talking to a tech...can't get over the feeling that they'll try to steer me away from doing this...thus not answering my question.

I should mention that I already voided the warranty when I upgraded my ram from 2x256 to 2x512 (only had 1 or 2 months left on it anyway)

had tons of fun getting to the primary slot (located under the keyboard)...eventually found a guide on the hp site that told me how to get to it (wasn't linked to in the already hard-to-find online manual)

Ok .. well I think that the interface for your Mother Board is Socket AM2.. I emphasize think. As long as the cpu is compatible with the board it should be fine... this is what im looking at http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... ry_cpu.asp you should be able to get a general idea by looking there. maybe

There could be an issue of BIOS support for the CPU. Even if the CPU 'fits', the BIOS may not support it and laptops have custom BIOS.

A faster CPU not issued to your laptops product line may also produce more heat than the cooling solution in the laptop is capable of dealing with.

Maintenance and Service Guide for the R4000 series says up to mobile AMD Athlon 64 4000+. That's not worth an upgrade.

I know for a fact that this isn't AM2 (besides being 940 pin instead of 939, I must use ddr instead of ddr2...not that I'm complainig about that)

this model was pretty much the last amd based laptop to not use athlon64 mobile or turion processors (suprisingly, my laptop runs 32C idle and about 54C load)

given that the cpu in my laptop is a 3200+ instead of a mobile 3200+(socket 939 vs 754, 1.5vcore vs 1.0v-1.35vcore, 1000HTT vs 800HTT, athlon 64 case badge instead of athlon mobile 64), a sanDiego core (althon 3700+) draws slightly more power, but produces less heat.
the manchester core (x2 3800+) draws about half as much power as the newcastle, and runs significantly cooler (or at least that's what I take from this review. I could be very mistaken however)

the problem i'm having is gathering any info about the motherboard beyond what cpu-z gave me
cpu-z might be giving me bad info, as far as I can tell...there are no s939 newcastle cores with 130nm processes with 1.5vcore

I assure you, your CPU is a mobile variation of the Athlon 64. The 939 version of the Desktop Athlon 64 3200 is 89 watts at maximum CPU usage. Your laptops power adaptor probably isn't even RATED for that much power. Needless to say, a desktop Athlon CPU would consume so much power that the battery lifetime would be a joke. Not to mention that the neccessary cooling solution would be the size of half a can of coke.

Anyway, the fastest CPU you can add is a 4000. It's a 25% increase in power and it will cost you more money than it's worth. Just add some more RAM and take care of it instead. :P

well...managed to find the processor that cpu-z says I have
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AM ... processors
under desktop processors
the mobile ones are all socket 754 with HTT800

My ac adapter reads as follows:
input
110-240v-2.4A, 50-60Hz
output
18.5v---6.5A 120W

the battery life is about 4 episodes...roughly 2 hrs (only reason I know that is because I use my laptop for entertainment when I'm on amtrak going to and from school/home)
