That was less about you and more about who may have taken your "advice" seriously. Just because you were being sarcastic doesn't mean a random new editor will know that. Therefore, sarcastic or not, I wanted to make it clear that getting footage off the net was "A Bad Thing."

It's not like we can stop them anyways...

Maybe not. However we can influence their decisions by making it clear that doing so is undesirable at the highest levels.

Maybe so, but then we'd only affect the people who actually give a damn. I say, if influencing them nicely doesn't work we should do what most of us already do and flame the living daylight out of people who continue to insist on fansubs and bootlegs after informed otherwise.

Problems with that:

1. Flies, Sugar, Vinegar.
2. Then the flamers becoming as annoying as the flamed.
3. In general, I want to be helpful. Most people in my experience (including myself) use downloaded footage for a combination of two reasons: ignorance and laziness. The first can be corrected. If the second one never is, eventually the lazy editor will give up and move on to a hobby more their style.

That's why i said people who "continue to insist". I agree that we shouldn't be rude at first sight. Actually I agree with everything you stated, I just pointed out that the effectiveness isn't as high as it should and some people do right their ways when shaken up.

And there's a third reason for people to use fansubs, other than ignorance and laziness: Being cheap. That one is also hard to fix.

I place that under laziness, personally. We all have items or services we spend money on that we really don't have to. Saving up so we can afford footage, or anything else for that matter, is a type of effort. Not doing so seems to me to be a type of unwillingness to expend the effort to wait.

Then there's also the whole "we don't support illegally obtaining source on this site" argument we'd have to use if someone filed suit and was not willing to settle... If there's evidence to the contrary it's damming.

Putting it that way, you're right.

But the policy on downloaded footage is written in the rules, so we're covered. Well, at least the Org as a judicial entity is.

It's also policy in the state i'm from (Massachusetts) that you can't smoke within 25 feet of a state building. I go to a public university (i.e. made up of state buildings - in fact there's a state poilice office in one of them) and not only do all the smokers congrigate right outside of the buildings, but cigarette boxes adorn the wall near just about every door. If you ask a professor or a student, they dont mind the smoking or think there's nothing they can do about it, although I can point you to the signs that say "no smoking within 25 feet of this building" and it's still done. Now if anyone with enough clout or a connection to a news agency went to the statehouse and complained, you can bet the administrators (dispite those signs) would still be blamed for the general consensous amongst faculty and students that "it's okay" to smoke there.

Can you see the similarity in the example? or am i totally off base here?
