Let me clarify. This information is from the FORUM RULES.
Signatures can contain:
1. A maximum of 512 characters within a space restiction of 4 lines of normal-sized text (font size 12). So you could have 5 or 6 lines if they are using a smaller sized font so you don't go above the height of 4 x 12pt. text.
2. Single images are restricted to a maximum size of 40 pixels tall, 600 pixels wide, and no greater than 100 kb in filesize. The maximum total height for your signature, if composed of entirely with images is 80 pixels high. Total combined signature dimensions should be no larger than 80 pixels high, 600 pixels wide. This means that, yes you can have multiple images in your signature, as long as they stay within the 80 x 600 restriction.
3. Any combination of the above 2, as long as you maintain the height and width restriction (look at my signature for an example).

Two reasons I can think of:
--Larger images take up more bandwidth, which sucks for those of us on less than lightning connections. I can practically hear my home computer groan in complaint when I click on a thread with a lot of pictures in it--my bandwidth is preciously low to begin with.
--Large sigs stretch the page. 600 pixels, plus avatars and borders, probably puts the page width just inside a 640x480 resolution, which is pretty common for people to use. Wider will force scrolling on smaller resoultions. And taller sigs cause more vertical scrolling. It just looks neater to enforce small sigs.

How about "this is a forum, so it's about posts and not signatures". Why should people need a 1024X768 signature anyways? More than stretching the page, it makes reading throught the threads a tiresome activity.
BTW, this thread is 500% off-topic. Is it still open for public utility or something?
