Will YouTube go down?

Post by surrealmom » Fri Jul 07, 2006 6:41 pm

After going through the whole YouTube thieves garbage that I know most editors endure, a fellow AMVer recently told me that they really believe Youtube is eventually going to fall into a whole mess of lawsuits (not because of AMVs of course, but liscensed television shows and movies that are fully posted.) Anyone else agree with this? Is there really hope that sites like Youtube will go down in flames? Obviously I wouldn't want the same thing to happen to a-m-v.org, but Youtube has such a variety of videos and is so damn popular, it doesn't seem unlikely that it's demise is approaching. Any thoughts?

If it goes down, those mass graves that rival anything in Russia will go to waste. Do you have any idea how much it cost for that chinese labor to mine tons upon tons of gold and make it into bars, and then when that was completed, slaughter them for their blood? Especially when you only get about 6 quarts a person. That was 10 cents a person I paid! I'm never shopping at Mao*Mart again. Certainly you can find cheaper prices in good ol' Oceania instead of Eastasia.

They probably won't go down completely, but if they get hit with enough lawsuits they'll take measures that equate to a mass-murder of their fan base, leaving only a small population who still like the site left, while the others go on to other video hosting sites.

The same question could be asked about the org, with the same attributes applied.

when things are flagged for coppywrited material they usually completely block the video file...

they also started doing the "10 minute" rule and to have more than 10 minutes you need to have a director's account... (this doesnt effect older uploads, and also hasnt stopped people from posting episodes in PARTS)

I get too many kiddies asking me to upload some anime series/Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer, and I have to keep refusing them... and this is why I refuse to get a Director's account... plus about 1/2 of my stuff would be considered breaking site rules to begin with, last thing i need is youtube paying more attention to me :P

though i did notice one "chick" (i donno could be a guy) uploading full eps to their directors account so yea O.o

unless the tube gets alot of people to CHECK EVERY FILE that comes in they will continue to have this problem... also i have a feeling that they dont really WANT to take down alot of the coppywrited material cause thats the current draw of the site... not the video blogs... people go there to watch music videos (of all kinds) and random titbits they might have missed on TV

hosatchel has the benefit of being in a position to negotiate with the people who would try to take it down. We don't.

Why do you hate youtube? and who cares if someone steals your video. Just read the comments and act like they are typing it for you.

Yes, because its perfectly fine if someone takes credit for your hard work. If you had it happen to you, maybe you'd understand.

P.S. This isnt a world cup forum, leave that outta this... Although I was sorta kinda rooting for Germany (ich bin 100% Deutsch).

Y o u tube does not have the power to negotiate with many of the companies its users are ripping off.

However, I don't think it will come to that. I think google will buy them out, and then google will enter into agreements to put content restrictions on what videos are uploaded. Most AMVs will remain safe, (google has time and time again been a supporter of our argument that AMVs, and their like, represent non-profit homages, and therefore fall under fair use) as will most types of parodies.

I find this the most preferable option.

Has anyone complained to Y o u tube that one of their videos was taken and should be removed? I haven't checked to see if this has occured with me recently, but I did check before I uploaded all of my videos myself to beat everyone else to the punch.
