Yes, it takes no talent to pose and act like an ass on MTV, but this is not the whole or even the core of hip-hop. In general, it's not smart to assume that the most visible and commercial manifestation of something is representative.

(And when a metalhead calls you out for being dumb about rap, it's serious Life Re-evaluation Time. )

It takes talent to become a best selling author. It takes talent to become a true professional wrestler. It take talent to be a comedian. It takes talent to become a movie star. It takes talent to make the interior of the Sistine Chapel one of the most famous artworks on God's green Earth. It takes talent to a top chef and get your own cooking show. It takes talen to turn an ugly apartment int a luxurious condo, without rebuilding the exterior. It takes talet to turn a rusty busted up station wagon and turn in to a next generation speed machine equipped with TVs, a satellite hook up, XM radio, PS2, PS3, XBox, XBox 360, Game Cube, WII, wireless internet, PSP in the steering wheel, DS in the dash board, and a stereo system that's so loud that people from 10 miles away know that your ass is coming. It takes talent to make into the NBA. It takes talent to take something, twist it up, chop it up, screw it up, put it back out, and have people wondering the fuck did you just give them. It takes talent to write lyrics to a song. It takes talent to write the music (or compose a beat) to a song. It takes talent to put the lyrics to the music and rework it until it sounds just right. It takes talent to generate an interest and fan base with your target audience. It takes talent to generate an interest and fan base outside of your target audience. It takes talent to have your fans wanting more.

My 7 year old sister knows how to use the program "Fruity Loops". She makes beats with it. If she can do it anybody can. So saying that means that everybody can do it. Which also means it must not take any talent. Talent is "Having a special abliltty that the Majority of people don't have." Everybody can talk. Except for paralyzed people. Rapping is talking. Every body can make words rhyme. There for rapping = something everybody can do. The only reason rap has such a large fan base is because of the culture behind it. Rappers talks 20 inch rims, escalades, Gangsta lifestyles. And a bunch of other stuff. Those things are the things that people think are "Cool". Its not rap that has the fan base its the culutural. If some one rapped about living in a sububan home with 2 kids and a stepford wife would anybody listen to it? If some one was rapping about their day job would anybody like? If some rapped about how they went to taco bell and had a nice conversation about the stock market with the dude at the drive thru window would any body listen to it??

singing is talking.. rapping is talking.. they're both talking..just branching off in different ways wait.. does that mean anybody can sing?

you know we can turn that message around and talk about rock instead, but i'd rather not spend some time doing that

SINGING requires talent. Not everybody can sing. Most people in this world are "Tone Deaf". Meaning they can't tell the diffrence between a "C" and a "C" minor. When they try to sing they sing off key and can't tell the diffrence.
