Interested in making some cool and original(?) video effects

Post by Indygo » Thu Jun 08, 2006 4:51 pm

Hi. I have a qeustion for you guys. I'm interested in making some AMVs with cool video effects. No I'm not talking about fade-ins, inverted colors, and other such simple tricks that can be made with Windows Movie Maker and AviSynth. No, I want to create cool video clips like 60's color streams, Kalaidoscopescopic moves, and other independent effects that would be intended to space out and transition (no it's not going to be used as filler) the actual anime clips. Also, does anyone know a good site where I can get some pre-made and free use movie clips that are 3-d rendered. I'd make those myself, except I need to take a class for 3-d modeling and animation (Can't afford college right now. I'd love to do multimedia as a job).

All suggestions are welcomed and thanks for your time.

PS If wondering who this guy is, I admit it: I'm a noob. No I'm not trying to run before I walk, I just want to have something to mess around with while I wait to learn the basics.

I'm not aware of anything like that. Most people learn to make the things that they want themselves.

I use Blender, URL=http://www.gimp.org]GIMP[/URL] and Inkscape to create a lot of what I want to see.

Those are powerful 2D (raster + vector) and 3D graphics tools, and although they are powerful they will not give you push-button effects. You'll need to learn the basics to some extent to get cool things with them; hope that isn't a problem.

If you want push-button effect work, you can invest thousands of dollars in stuff like Motion, Shake, and Maya, although even those tools require substantial training.

If the effects are premade, what's original then? Beside this, such effects often don't look cool.

Get familiar with your editing program. Find out what the effects can do and learn how to combine them so that you can create really original effects. Depending on the possibilities of your software, the support of (a) good graphics program(s) and possibly some 3D software can be helpfull.

Download blender and some tutorials. All it costs is time (and pacience). Video effects are a whole different thing from the editing/syncing that amv's are based around. If you want to make amv's, you should start with windows movie maker and don't think about effects (other than simple transitions and alpha masks) for at least 6 months.
