I have yet to not be able to rip tracks off of a music CD yet. But then again, I don't buy much music anymore. And not counting AMVs, I haven't downloaded any music since 2001 or 2002. Anyways...

I use Exact Audio Copy to rip CDs. You can also try CDex. Your best bet is to try starting the program before loading the CD so any software on the CD isn't started (assuming the program has "CD autostart" disabled). Another trick is to hold the "shift" key down while inserting the CD, assuming you have disabled Microsoft's "StickyKeys" and "FilterKeys" "features" (why must Microsoft assume I am handicapped...).

IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THE CDS LISTED HERE, you should IMMEDIATELY remove or patch the copy protection software. If you haven't already, install and/or update any anti-virus and anti-spyware software you have. I also recommend that you should exchange or return the CD for a non-copyprotected one. More details here.

For help on using copy-protected music (e.g. music from Apple's iTunes store with "FairPlay" DRM) there are ways to do this, but I'm tired from Google-ing too much.

As for breaking any laws... people will argue "fair use" rights. Me, I just want to be able to play the music I legally purchased on what ever device I want to.

For some reason I think that was the funniest thing I have read the entire week.

People are trying to get through the copy protection with complex methods and obscure software (I've seen forums where people try teaching you hhow to disable copy protection using the COMMAND PROMPT) and you come up with the simplest idea possible... and it works.

I salute you, in the name of all reasonable people in the planet.
