Staying motivated?

This ever happen to you?

1. You hear this song and see visions of an AMV "OMG this would make an awesome AMV"

2. You get some of the scenes you had in mind ripped/encoded..

THEN

You're like bleh...I dunno if it's gonna be any good, this clip doesn't go with the beat that well, encoding takes FOREVER and

You just fizzle out and lose motivation..

Is this normal to go through or is there tricks to keeping yourself motivated and making your AMV vision reality?

Everyone goes through this. Its a natural part of the creative process.

Things to help:

1. Unplug your internet.

2. Spend the time cutting clips. If you're feeling uninspired its a great zen activity to see the footage and let your mind wander. It will get you more in touch with what you really want out of the video and if its possible.

3. If you honestly feel your video isn't going anywhere, and you're not liking what its turning into, stop it. Don't send betas to people looking for aproval, just stop it. Kill it, murder it, execute it, cut its head off. And then start a new.

4. If you've been sitting at your computer for more than 2 hours get up and do 20 jumping jacks. It helps get the blood flowing and in turn helps your brain work.

5. Eat well and take lots of vitamin B.

If you're not bond to a deadline, don't force it. Let it rest for a while. Start another project, or do something completly different. I have a project that started in August 05. While the basic editing is mostly done, it's very difficult to visualize the idea behind it. From time to time I get an idea how to show something or how to show it better than it's already done. Then I start editing again and if the attack of inspiration is over I let it rest again. That way I'll continue until I feel it's right.

Give up...

... the project I mean.

It's not like you're under some contract to complete it or you'll be losing out on some massive opportunity. It's a hobby, it's something "fun" to do. If it turns out dully, if it turns out not to your liking and you don't foresee a way to make it work, why bother beating yourself up over it.

It happens... it happens often for many here. For me, I give up almost even before I begin to edit just because I got tired of the idea even before I cut the first clip.

I just stop...There are good ideas and there are those that sound good, but they just don't work.

However if I spent all that time getting clips I'd probably use them in some other AMV.

I listen to the song, over and over again. If the song has a PV/MV (Promotional Video/Music Video) to it, then I watch that and grab inspiration for effects and style and the concepts. If I still can't come up with anything, I scrap the project.

That's when its time to open the wallet and start waving $$$ in front of editors to see which one jumps.
