The Premiere and the Contest

Post by Ladymercury » Tue May 16, 2006 12:09 pm

What are your opinions on releasing videos before their premiere at a contest your participating in? Some people do it while others don't, I was wondering... what is your take on it? If you're against it do you look down on those who do release before its contest premiere and if you're for, why do you do it?

Me, I'm in a standstill. If I finish an AMV a month till convention premiere I'm itching to release it but sometimes I feel bad so I don't.

my most recent video wasn't released until after the con.
i go by when i completed it, compared to the date of the contest.
i can only resist uploading it for so long. if i have to wait over a month and half for the contest, that sucker gets uploaded

Eh, I've yet to make a video only for a con.

For me, cons are just extra exposure. Perhaps because the audience for most of my videos (which tend to be on the odd/experimental side) is more easily found online. If a con allows me to toss it out to a bigger audience on a nice, big screen - I'm only grateful :)

Oh, and from the other side - actually, I kind of like it when I sit at a con and go "oh, this is that video by so-and-so, sweet!" :)
Doesn't spoil the impact of it for me at all, in fact, it's a nice new perspective if anything. Videos on the big screen aren't quite the same as on a computer monitor - it's neat to see how different they appear that way, even.

I figure since Cons get 100's of AMV submissions each year and since they only show about 20 or so for the actual show then waiting for it to premiere might take a while.

As for me... I only want to upload what is premiered in conventions. That's why I only have 1 up right now, even though I have about 6 or 7 AMV's under my belt. Well... that's only half true. Cuz I only treat it like that here on the org. I have uploaded a good majority of my AMV's on youtube, but that's for a different reason. There are some of mine though I will never show, and if u do see it, then yer in my room w/ the door locked behind you as you sign a waver saying if u tell any1 about it I have the right to break yer legs.

The reason I treat the org differently though is because you guys are editors like me so when I put something up I have to KNOW for a fact it's good, and that u guys would like it.... and I also think I remember reading something about no nudity or somethin which sux ass cuz I have a Berserk AMV that shows Caska's tittys. It's on youtube though. It's kinda weird but it works. It's called Berserk BANG BANG if u wanna check it out.

WHOA!!! way off topic. sorry guys. anyway... it doesn't matter. Do what ya want. Lots of people start making AMV's b4 they even think about putting them into contests, and they probably still want exposure for it, and they deserve it. But watching yer AMV on a 50ft screen w/ a live audience of 300 people ain't nuttin like getting over 1,000 hits.
I put it in her butt,

hits are different than downloads (my second amv...and the newest [over 6 months old] has ~800 hits but only ~173 dls)
And I'd prefer a 50 foot screen with 300 crazed anime fans (just me)

if I ever manage to finish my current project, I'll probably premiere it here after the first con I submit it to (AWA perhaps) starts (or the amv deadline passes) because in addition to getting my name and work out there, I'd like for people to see and appreciate the toils of borderline otakudom...with a possibility of recieving an award (or some type of congratulatory recognition) from a contest

and for why youtube is filtered...probably to avoid solisitation for a competeing service (or something along those lines methinks)

For me it depends on the video. I have two videos sent to fanime, one is up for download the other is not.

For some videos, the 'surprise' factor is needed. Expecially for comedy videos where the jokes fail the second time watching.

With people bringing laptops now adays, I've limited handing out my videos on CD to people at the convention until after the contest at times even.

If people have seen all the AMVs before the conventions, why bother going to the contest, and thus hopefully voting for your video.

In reverse, I've seen videos released and generate a 'hype', and so when shown at a contest people will vote for it, because they are familuar with it.
