Anyways, I'll need the specific model to give exact steps, but you need to turn off the built-in DEMO mode. Basically, go to the setup menu and somewhere there is a Demo Mode option. Turn it OFF. Also, if your model has actual buttons to control the playback (i.e., not on-screen controls), you can press and hold the "stop" button down while turning the camera on. Or was it the "play" button. Hrm.
Putting a tape in there will also make the demo stop, but unless you are recording at the time, the camera will shut off after 5 minutes to save some wear-and-tear on the tape mechanism and save battery life (assuming you are on battery power).

Actually, I knew about that too, but I couldn't get to the camera as it was already hanging in place to record so i could not see the buttons to turn it off via menu.
