Only if you get their permission. And if it's only a scene or two I say it's ok but if you are going to take effects and cuts then I would say no because then it isn't your AMV. But you should only do it if you get the original creato'r permsission.

If you leave the cuts in some people notice, if it's just the scene you really won't notice but there is a possibility of it. And really I do consider it VERY rude and dissrespectful to teh creator to use their footage without their permission.

PLEASE don't do it without the creators permission. I personally get really mad when other people use clips from my videos. THe way I see it I put tons of money and effort into my videos to entertain others, not to supply them with source.

You can't always tell what's edited either. I do noise filtering, clip off noise at the bottom, adjust color, change speed, etc. etc. Those are efforts that I put into the video that I don't want to see in others.

So please respect other AMV creators and just ask. Who knows, maybe they can hook you up with source clips instead of taking from already heavily comporessed videos.

Ohh, and there are pseudo scientific methods for telling if your footage was used in another AMV. Load that amv along with yours into AfterEffects or Premiere and apply the difference blending mode. If the difference is just a few ghosts caused by compression artifacts as opposed to a foggy but solid image, then there is a VERY high probablity that the clips were from the same source.

I know technically AMVs are taking from the original artists and I can't say don't take from my videos without being a hippocite. But we all need to respect each other's wishes to keep the AMV community strong and positive, and some people like me really REALLY don't like having their videos used as source.

We take from DVDs we bought legally and edit. If you take someone else's work and use it for yourself without permission you are stealing what they worked hard on. If you edit it yourself you are a least putting more work in it and aren't being a lazy ass.

It's pretty simple. If you use Utena as your source you put "utena" in the database.

If you use Will's utena video you should really put "First we take manhattan" (sorry dont recall the name) or similar. I personally see using the source as a homage and if you dont say where you got it from then you are just lying to people.

Just be honest and all will be good.
