Actually, the 8088 Corruption link is fairly off-topic, and has nothing to do with the point. Good try, though.

The "cannot play" suggestion is a good idea, although I think it would be better if people could somehow prove that the problem is not because they were too lazy to get the required software, but because they really cannot play it due to e.g. hardware limitations.

That's why we're suggesting a link to the guide. When people try to play the video and realize they can't, they click the link and read the guide. The guide then tells them if they need a codec, which one they need, and where to get it. No codecs needed to watch amvs on this site are hard to get. They're all linked in the guide. If someone comes up with a brand new codec that gets adopted here, I'm sure someone will add it onto the guide (or create an updated version of the guide).

As for not knowing until you download...a lot of amvs tell you whether you'll need to get a new codec in the vid description. The problem is, some people can't be bothered to read that line that says "this is an xvid encode, if you can't play the video, get the codec from this guide: url" before they download, so most people don't bother to put it in the description.

Either way, a link can fix this problem for anyone who clicks it, and can't possibly hurt anything. It's just a question of how difficult it is (coding) to add a link to all the vid description pages on the org.

For people with computers that can't handle videos...well, that's sad, but there's not really anything you can do about it. I'm not buying them a more high powered computer. I'll be happy to tell them where to get tmpgenc so they can convert the video to something their computer can handle, but other than that, it's a 'too bad' situation. It's like people complaining that they can't download because they don't have an internet connection at home. Aside from offering to load the vid to some streaming site they can watch at school, there's not much you can do for them. o.O

now see here is a beautiful idea... doing that, doing the topic, and copiling all of the codecs on this site and creating links in the guides mentioned above.

Amazingly enough, the compilation part has already been done. Some updates are required for e.g. H.264 playback, but it's nothing terribly big.

The only part that hasn't been done is the spoon-feeding.

the fact that they're easy enough to find using google
along with the observation that the people who need the codec(s) are probably the same people who don't read the guides...so they would hardly use the codec page

Just something that came into my head, if it's really important to you, you can get a free web host and make a simple html page with links to all the codecs
you could then link to it in your sig (like the filezilla link in mine) or in your video info page
