I think this was covered in the news posts when it first happened, and for various reasons, it was not really possible to do that.CelticWhisper wrote:I dunno. This is a nice site for hosting, but a tiny part of me thinks the Geo guy has a point, as frothing-at-the-mouth rabid as he sounds. It WAS shitty what happened, and I feel sorry for the people who got their vids axed. Couldn't Phade have struck a deal with Wind-up though? Or at least made some kind of super-uber-hyper disclaimer with all the ownership info and such? Though I think there was a thread that had all about why not.

That's true, but it doesn't run on 64-bit architectures (unless you're running an IA-32 emulation layer, and even then it's not too hot), and there's better programs out there anyway -- check the Free/Open Source Software List for a (somewhat) complete compilation of them.CelticWhisper wrote:Oh, one more thing. Can I be a complete and utter killjoy, and mention that one could use VirtualDub on Linux through using WINE?

he did.. I'm sure that several other artists that will remain nameless are still on this site that are under the Wind-up label...CelticWhisper wrote: It WAS shitty what happened, and I feel sorry for the people who got their vids axed. Couldn't Phade have struck a deal with Wind-up though?

he struck a deal by cutting his losses and moving on with life... he never said to stop making seether/creed/evenescence amvs, infact youre free to make as many as you want...
you can even list them here still, he hasnt stopped the listing of them... he just stopped people from linking to them, and stopped people from having a local download... that is called cutting his losses... and moving on...
its a shame it happened but truthfully Wind-up had EVERY RIGHT to ask us to stop... it could have been alot worse than a C&D order they could have outright sued the site... the only problem I see here is that Wind-up is severly HARMING their own fan-base...
I'm sick of people seeing Phade as the "bad guy" hes not the bad guy... he did what he could... and saved as many locals as he could...
as was stated several times before, the original mission of this site was to LIST not to HOST... the hosting was an added bonus... the icing on the cake... not the other way around.

Scintilla's My Evil Alien was good.Beowulf wrote:Name a good Creed/Evanescence/Seether video. This isn't the end of the world.
But Yeah, It's silly to complain because a free service, that isn't even the main goal of the site, gets taken away. It would have been stupid for Phade to have retaliated. And really, this only stops you from gettng the videos from this site. You're free to use other methods to find the videos.

Ive only EVER liked one Evanescence video.. and it was "decent".. What I dont get though is that we buy anime... We buy music. We make music videos! As long as were not selling the video I dont see the problem?Beowulf wrote: Name a good Creed/Evanescence/Seether video. This isn't the end of the world
Because by logic... If u were to buy a toy car and paint it. would the toy company persue a law suit because you made something out the product?...

Haha, more or less teh guy seems to have is own personal vendetta that he wants to get across. This is no better than the rants I've been seeing on Bleach forums recently asking people to rally against Viz for licensing Bleach. You may be adimant about your desires but you certainly aren't going to find enough common idiots to put together an efficient posse. Let alone any one of those in that group that would be remotely competent enough to accomplish your goal.

But seriously, that guy has some issues to work out. He has a perfect right to disagree with Phade's actions, and he may not be alone in that. But however much he might disagree with Phade, his personal attack on him (calling him a spineless worm) was totally uncalled for. It was kind of ironic that he was trying to make out his arguement as being logical, but he started it off with blatant mudslinging. I was also blown away by his statement that if users wouldn't leave this site on their own, that he would MAKE this site get shut down. Wasn't he bitching about Phade pushing other people around? That makes him a hypocrit. I really like this site and I would be PISSED if it got shut down because some random asshole decided that because he didn't like it no else should either.
I'm also amazed by his continual insistance that Google would fight copyright law in court. As he pointed out himself, they are a large company. It would not be in Google's best interest to fight against charges of copyright infringement. They want to make profits, they don't want to throw away large amounts of money in a legal battle they are unlikely to win for a few easily-replaceable users. That's just how capitalism works. And just look at how Google is allowing themselves to be censored by the Chinese government. Why would they balk at comparitively less from the U.S. government?
Technically we are using intellectual property without permission of the owners, and that's illegal. Its not just about the bands/animators getting money, its about their ideas and material belonging to them. Painting a toy car wouldn't be illegal because that's your car now. But if you were to take that toy car, build something new with it, and distribute it, that would be illegal. Copyright law is just as much to protect people's original ideas as it is about protecting the materials produced from those ideas.Dookstar wrote:What I dont get though is that we buy anime...
