Uumm I think you meant May 17th. Anyways last year Otakon didn't get the rules up until 2 months before the deadline. So I would expect them to be posted around March 17th or somewhere in that area.

II. AMV CONTENT RULES
01. COMPONENTS/INGREDIENTS OF SUBMISSIONS
B. Anime Music Videos cannot incorporate the subtitles or dubbed sound from licensed commercial translations. The companies that license and produce these commercially translated versions of anime attend the convention, and we just don't need grief from them over this issue.
Would this mean that I could not submit this AMV because of the parts toward the end where you hear the character's speaking in English?
That means you can't use the english voices, but if you did the japanese voices with your own subtitles then that would be fine.
I think that's a plain stupid rule to not have any English dub voices at all in a video; it reeks of "Japanese VAs are far superior than the English VAs" than "we don't want to piss off the American licensors of the anime series being used." English dubs have for the most part gotten better by leaps and bounds all across the board than 10 years ago. Sadly, almost all conventions have this rule in place in one form or another, with the exception of AWA's contests.
Well you can have english voice dubs (as long as you are the actor). Just no licensed professional dubs may be used, as it falls under copyright laws and would leave the con open to a law suite. We don't want that to happen right?

I imagine a few voice actors and companies would have no problem with people using their licensed material in this format (AMV's are somewhat considered free advertising), however the contest coordinator and staff are bound by what the lawyers say, and the current stance on the subject is we just can't do it.

With that out of the way I wanted to say hi to everyone! I'm pretty much just poking my head up from my computer games and work to take a look around at what's going on so far.

Oh, right. Topic. Got'cha.

Uhm, yeah. Workin' on my Otakon AMV, finally. Wanna have it done before April 1st for Anime Boston, too. Debating whether I should take the extra time on it to hold it off for Otakon.

Also gotta work on some more AMV comics. Dammit, AMV community, be funny! Make my job easy!

You mean things like anonymous quick comments aren't funny?

And to stay on topic - what's up John? See you in the summer!

Chris

PS - I will be entering, I'm just torn between funny and serious.
To paraphrase one Mr. Cool James, please refrain from referring to it as a revival, I've been lurking for ages.

well I'm deploying to Iraq and I've been way too busy getting ready to finish my amv for this year :( I was gona try for serious/dramatic again but ill just save the idea for next year i guess.

word of advice: if you plan on ever making any competitive amv's; don't join the military :)

On the upside, as a combat videographer (hence, how i myself learned to edit. in fact we use premier pro at my shop and we experience all the frustrations the amv community goes thru.) as a combat cinematographer I'll be able to make some sweet RL music videos so at least ill still be in practice :]]]

Anyway. i was really looking to seeing some of you guys again and get my ass kicked in the contest, but there's always next year.

BTW atomX, will you have my babies?

When can we expect the updated rules to appear on the site?

I know I can access the old rules but still.
