Why WMV?? WHY!?!?

Post by gadimus » Sun Mar 12, 2006 1:31 pm

I'm new here, I've known about site and been mildly amused with it but now I'm just getting into checking out what there is mostly because of my ipod video.

For a time this was good, that was, until I started downloading newer stuff and noticed a lot of it was .wmv format. The problem with that is I cannot convert it to ipod video as I have a few of the older videos and been able to take some of the greats on the road with me to convert the masses to the AMV doctrine of love.

Basically I just want to know why people are making their amvs in wmv? On top of it being less portable, it can only be played in windows media player (think of our poor mac friends!) and lastly its just a gross file extension. By using wmv you're all contributing to the 'microsoft to rule the world' and we all know that the 'google to rule the world' is a way better movement to follow, at least it's realistic and doesn't hurt people along the way.

You may say 'google doesnt have a media format!', exactly why you should just use avi or something nice like that instead. When the google os comes out and is sold on 50$ desktops from walmart then you can start using the proprietary .ogle video and image format in the ogleView20X6.

That started mostly coherent, and then drifted off into something about GoogleOS.

. . .

What?

Really, this thread needs to start making sense. Fast. Or I'll lock it without remorse.

Leaving aside the odd Google brainwashing you've gone under, the reason most AMVs are in .WMV format is because most AMVs are made with Windows Movie Maker, and the extra steps to get WMM to give you an .avi file (involving some side programs and some special configuartion files) are either beyond the makers technically or not done simply out of laziness. There are several programs out there that can convert .wmv to a more useable format. EO Video comes to mind.

Actually, I agree with the OP. WMV sucks donkey balls, doubly for the huge cost of its development (I'm sure SysKin here could go on for days about the dev budget difference between WMV and XviD, and how it translates into quality  ).

But follow Kewp and use EO video. And just smirk at those who haven't discovered the higher pastures of good compression

We do it because it's just so much fun to fuck you over.

Also, WMV9 has pretty good compression with small quality loss. Sucks to be you.

I saw a question in the post along the lines of "why do people make their amvs in wmv format?" I didn't bother reading the rest of the post, but the answer to that question is, "because they make their amvs in Windows Movie Maker."

No Way! I would never destroy my ipod, it saved my life like 10 times.

One time my pal Johnson was playing a disco and his tape deck exploded all over the place, then we had to think quick or the loud crowd of jacked out dancers would've stomped us good. We wired up one of them crazy connectors to split the microphone hole into two left right audio cables and popped some tunes out. It was pretty good.

I just finished watching some Strong bad emails on the ipod, it was pretty great. But earlier I really just wanted to be upset over the wmvs~~~

As for a google os, and ogleView20X6 they might actually be for real. If you guys read the secret underground conspiracy news positing at yahoo.ca you might know this. I added the walmart because I think they'd know people who know anything are gonna want the google computer and people who don't know anything are gonna shop at walmart for a computer anyways. Think about it, it would never break or stop running ever, if you bought 6 they would transform into some kind of robot.

OK.

If anyone reading this actually takes gadimus seriously about anything in future, please remember that one paragraph and re-adjust your assessment accordingly.

This guy is like a cross of danielwang and post-it.

Google actually does have a media format; if you download anything off Google Video, you'll be able to see exactly what it is. (Specifically, it's the Flash video codec; look up FLV1. MPEG layer III audio is also common.) If you don't believe me, get a copy of mplayer and have it identify the stream. Or get a hex editor, whichever.

Finally, (1) AVI is not a codec, it's a container; and (2) it sucks ass. Anyone in the know is moving to either MP4 or Matroska. If you want to know why, please ask coherently and succinctly.
