Some Questions About Codecs

Post by Shamensyth » Wed Mar 01, 2006 1:47 pm

Just a simple question regarding codecs...

Which is better?

Matroska Codec or CCCP?

Because It said in the CCCP website that you need to uninstall all codecs installed before you install that codec, so which one is better?

If you don't want to mess up your current configuration or go through the hassle of uninstalling all that stuff, then just installing Haali's Media Splitter is the way to go. And as far as I know, I thought CCCP was mainly for viewing, not editing. My drive to have the newest versions of support software I routinely use (and my reliance of ffdshow's VFW interface for HuffYV12 and MJPEG) would make CCCP somewhat useless on my setup, not to mention that I can already play 99% of the video formats I come across, and in Windows Media Player 6.4 to boot.

There is no Matroska codec; it's a splitter. CCCP installs said splitter, along with a stripped down version of ffdshow (which is a codec of sorts) that's geared for decoding only. I'm not sure of other things it installs along with it, though.

So, even if I uninstall Matroska, it will be reinstalled Via the CCCP? okie, thanks, and, where can I get links of the codecs you said, that plays almost all of the Videos. :)
Thanks again. :)

Haali's Media Splitter:
http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/

ffdshow:
http://m17n.cool.ne.jp/freeware/mpc/

But both of those come with CCCP anyway. You'd only need to install them separately to get the newest versions of each, and the VFW interface in the case of ffdshow.
