Ideal Size?

Post by Xarathion » Mon Feb 20, 2006 11:09 pm

What's the ideal size for AMV's? The one's that I've watched tend to be half and half between 320x240 and 640x480. The smaller resolution brings down the file size, but which do you all prefer?

Just wanted to know so I'll set all my future AMV's to the more popular size. Better visual quality vs. more people willing to download... :?

640x480.

I don't think filesize plays too much of a role anymore these days. The most popular videos are usually quite large.

Considering I'm on a monitor with a native resolution of 1920x1600 I'd personally prefer you to make a video in 640x480...

Using a good codec and cleaning your sources can do a good job of making your video's filesize small instead of simply resorting to reduce the frame size.

640x480 for 4:3 is good. but i like 848x480 for 16:9 if the video quality can manage it.

I tend to forget many ppl are STILL on dialup. I want to say 640x480 but based on that I think a smaller size like 320x240 is just fine. If your well known and know ppl will download your shit anyway by all means go for something between 640 and 320, but I think the rest of us should remember... just remember what it's like to d/l 2 megs per hour while takeing up your landline. It aint pretty.

K that aside when my head gets inflated I still rareley approach 640x480, unless the original dvd is encoded in 640x, but most is 720 or larger. My final is usually like 512x288 or 412x412 or non-standard res' like that. Hey, every little bit counts.

But yeah I wouldn't go over 640x no matter what though... not on DVD technology.
If you do not think so... you will DIE

Uh, 640x[whatever] isn't even allowed by the DVD-Video standard. The dominant resolution is 720x480 (or 720x576 for PAL systems) with the proper pixel aspect ratio flags set and/or appropriate letterboxing to get things right. There are others, but nothing has 640 horizontal pixels. See: http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#3.4

On the topic:

I'd like to say that you should go for original resolution of your sources with proper display/pixel aspect ratio flags set. Resizing should (and can) be done on the player end, not the encoding end.

However, we have lots of people using brain-dead players like Windows Media Player, so that isn't going to change for a while.

It's worh it to remember that not only are plenty of viewers still on dial-up, but there are also those viewers who would have problems playing back a full-res DivX/XviD file without serious stutterage (well, this is also dependant on bitrate) because their hardware simply can't handle it.

Personally, I try to provide at least two versions of each of my videos, each at a different resolution.

Unless I just don't care enough about a particular video to bother with it (cf. "Eikoden Trailer").
