Wrong Duration in video clip. Please help!!!

Post by RealAldebaran » Tue Jan 31, 2006 12:55 pm

Hi! I have a video wth wrong Duration. I really know that it must be about 1 hour long, but player shows only 4 min. All video encoders also shows 4min.. I can't change it any how. So, How can I fix that, which program to use? Video format is Mpeg-2.
Thank You! :)

Does it still play the full hour?

More infromation would help.

I assume that you took video from a dvd, (which should add up to about 1 hour)
What programs did you use?
what codec(s) did you use?
what editing program are you using?

To me, it sounds like you used Vitrtual Dub (Mod or original) and tried to make the file really small using Divx or Xvid.

Doing some messing around with compression and filesize, I found that (at very low bitrates and/or quality) the video which was about 4 minutes long, only showed about 0:13 on any player. In addition, the video was broken up into very jerky fragments. I would see about 4 different sets of picture spanning about 12-16 frames for a while.
(example: Frame set a, a, a, a, b, b, b, b, c, c, c, c, d, d, d, d would play over and over)

I didn't edited this video at all. I downloaded it. I know that this clip was ripped from DVD, and used mpeg-2 codec. I tried to watch this video in all players, they all showed 4.19 min duration and only played thus. Exception was only Power DVD 6, it played 1 hour and 5 min. and everything looked and was fine.

But it is too big (1.36GB), so I want to make it smaller, convert it to Divx, or something like that. However, I can't do this because all editing programs shows also 4 min, and they convert only 4 min, nomore.

I use many editing programs, one of them is Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 , but it also can't help (or I have no manners, how to do it  ).

So, do you know how to do that, how to fix duration? Thank you!

Hmmm... sounds like something might be wrong with a header in the file. I don't really have access to the byte-by-byte format of mpeg, but it seems like there might be a header coded into the file that stores the length of the video. That header might be mis-written. Like you said, all the content is there, so don't get too discouraged.

You might want to use TMPGEnc's MPEG Tools to demux the video stream to a separate file and see if your editors won't take that instead.

I demuxed video with MPGEnc's MPEG Tools, it helped a little because now all players recognize 1h and 5min, but when I Multiplex again or encode this video, (of course, all players now recognize 1 h 5min) where is an audio gain.. :?
First video plays well, but when comes about 7 min video become slower and audio goes first? how to fix that (audio gain) now? Thank You!

If you have it to that point, I might try re-encoding it to another format. That might force out whatever the arror is. of course, you'll lose quality, which would b ebad.
