A lot of the problem with old videos is that they are compressed like shit. I mean a lot of kevin caldwell's videos are vcd quality mpegs. That doesn't give them character or anything, that just makes them look like shit. The actual video itself im sure, is much more beautiful than what is actually available for us.

You know, even though someone redid KC's Engel awhile back, I still watch the original, VCD-quality MPEG instead of the "re-mastered" copy. One reason is that there is a segment (the EoE part, iirc) that was done incorrectly (i.e., no letterbox). And mostly because the feelings I have attached to the original copy, tattered and old that it is, kinda like a favorite shirt.

Yeah, the one who remastered it's the one that posted this thread.Willen wrote:You know, even though someone redid KC's Engel awhile back, I still watch the original, VCD-quality MPEG instead of the "re-mastered" copy. Right Now Someone Is Reading This Title

(I could recompress the English one...)
I have a tape that he sent me of his videos, but unfortunately it's from before he did Believe and Caffeine Encomium. And Sabre Dance has "PLAY / NORM / HIFI" written on it, just like the org copy.Zarxrax wrote:I mean a lot of kevin caldwell's videos are vcd quality mpegs.

To make more money. It seems to be working.Turbo wrote: Why do you think Gainax made Renewal version of Evangelion
(1) To make more money.why Hollywood will make HDTV version of their movies?
(2) To push restrictive DRM schemes to ensure (1) and control.
It's not cost-effective to provide quality: the consumer always wants more. Feeding shit down consumer's throats usually works pretty well, though.
There is a significant difference: when art restoration is done, the restorer doesn't attempt to re-create the entire thing from scratch using the original as a baseline. Art restoration is more akin to video filtering. Why museums repair their old work of art?

Of course they do it for money. But I mean that they know what to do and they know that people'll buy this new HI-quality versions. And this all means that everybody want to have old things not on VHS, but on HDTV. =)
