I am not sure I understand how to address the intent of this message so I will answer it in two different ways.
First, why did we choose to classify one of our contests as amateur and another as expert? The answer here is very simple. The "amateur" contest is not for individuals who have won major AMV contests or are involved in professional editing projects. After polling the fanbase we felt one of the best ways to improve the overall quality of the contests and recognize more individual contributors to the community was to break the contest into these two venues.
Also, if you look up the word amateur it should be very clear that amateur does not equal beginner. It simply means 'a person who engages in an art, science, study, or athletic activity as a pastime rather than as a profession'.
We also recognize that there are many amateurs who are capable of producing work at a level equivalent or better than most professionals. So the Experts contest is designed as much for them as it is for professionals. However, in order to maintain consitency and quality of the show we have to have a way to qualify individuals for the Experts contest. We have chosen that criteria to be the receipt of an award from a nationally recognized convention or contest or professional references. For more information please see:

Second, what makes me classfied as an amateur? Out of the 11 AMV contest and showcase submissions I have made over the years I have never engaged in professional work or accepted money for any services related to video editing or composition.
Hope this helps.
