That question is meaningless because you didn't specify a codec for the AVI format (also, you didn't say whether you meant MPEG-1 or MPEG-2), and you didn't give an intended purpose (archival? distribution? conventions? streaming?).

I think as far as the human eye knows they are about the same. Although in recompression I think MPEG handles better. (But as far as playback I think that AVI is a bit ahead.)
Why do people complain about things? Why can't they just be happy that they were made for them?
I respect everyone's right to not like something, but complaining about it will acomplish nothing...

aren't they containers? I like most avi compression methods than I like mpeg compression methods. I use to hate anything in avi format because I couldn't get them to work on my dads mac, then when I got my own pc.. It still seemed like mpeg videos played better. Now I like Avi better and it usually works better than mpeg for me.

there are many purposes... are you talking distrobution? or entering a con? or putting them on DVD or possibly for something else???

actually, I would like to know which is better for DVD playback. I would like to watch the AMVs I really like on my Big screen Television, any info on what format would work well? (I tried once but the end result was horrible...)

"avi" is a container... mpeg is a format (correct me if i'm wrong).

you cannot compair them without giving a codec to compair with mpeg1.

for amv purposes, most use xvid or divx... xvid > mpeg1/mpeg2 for distrobution purposes. the bitrate to quality ratio is far superior if you know how to encode it right.
