First of all I would like to apologize if this has been answered or posted before. I haven't been on the forums for like 3 months and I havn't seen anything that really answers it.

What is the better machine/program for video editing? Meaning PC/Premiere or MAC/FCP? does anyone have any like definite answers? Or can anyone explain the advantages / disadvantages of each? I know there are some experts on these forums becuase they work(ed) for the companies before.

I want to know because my roomate insists on MAC/FCP and I like PC/Premiere. He also said "Good luck trying to find a job that uses premeire (we go to The Art Institutes International of MN).

Also I want to say Discreet's Combustion 4 is another video editing? or it may be just effects I forget if thats the one or if its another program an instuctor showed me, but he said it was used in films. How is that if anyone has experience with it?

In general the professional world uses Macs... That said, Big, professional, business can afford to spend 10 grand on a system with the best software, ergonomically designed workstations, and personal expresso makers for all their employees.

From what I understand, the editing industry is indeed dominated by Macs running Final Cut Pro and/or Avid. However, there are other options out there (Premiere or Avid on PCs, smoke on Linux/Solaris/IRIX boxes). So don't tie yourself too much to any one program, try to learn as many as you can.

To answer your other question, combustion is more for effects than actual editing, yes. I haven't seen 4s interface, but 3 doesn't have a timeline at all, making it kind of difficult to set up clip sequences.

In addition what badmartialarts said, the professional world uses systems from Pinnacle and Cinegy. Adobe Premiere is only a semiprofessional programm and not used for high end editing systems.

Alright, thanks for the responses, I guess I have another program to learn, it'll be harder since I don't have a mac but I guess whatever the professional people want. Any more info is welcome if there is any. Thanks again guys.

From Avid, Pinnacle and Cinegy either a Windows version exists or it's a Windows solution at all. The domination of Mac's isn't that strong like some people believe.

I've found that most people who learn using a Mac for graphics/video editing and use it for a while get used to it so they don't switch. Almost all businesses use PCs for general work and one or more Macs in the advertising section. Unless you are tied to FCP, the PC versions of Pinnacle Avid, etc, do the same things as the Mac ones.

A plus for the Windows PC route is that a $2000 machine will perform as good or better than a $3000 Mac. (Or so I like to believe.)

Theres no use wasting all that extra cash for a mac. From what your profile shows, you (and most people) would never need more than a $1500 windows machine with a copy of magix and free dl of gimp. Actualy I doubt any amv'er would ever need more than that (unless they're fuly hardk0re zarx style). So just spend however much you possibly can on a pc and then $50-$100 for the editor. Make sure you get the best VGA you can, Oblivion should be out by march.

Combustion 4 is a high end composition and effects prograom like After Effects. It's not a NLE (Non Linear Editor) ala vegas and premier.

well, soon it won't matter as Apple is now going to Intel chips...

so the avenue of programs once exclusively held by windows are now available to mac users, and if the software folks are going to adapt, vice-versa too.
