Excel Saga
I was just wondering if anyone owns or has seen Excel Saga. I was thinking of buying the series, but I'm not quite sure yet. Is it worth the money?

I highly recommend Excel Saga if you're into really over the top anime. It's mocking Japanese pop culture so you know they have a lot of material to work with, and they work with it quite well.
I'd recommend finding the first DVD cheap off half.com or Ebay and seeing if you like it. On both sites there's a ton of copies of the first DVD for around $2-3.

If you like comedy shows and parodies then you can't go wrong with Excel Saga. Your mileage may vary depending on how much anime you've seen though.

I don't know...
I think it depends on the person...I was laughing my butt off while a friend of mine did so, too, but: after 2-3 episodes he was just wondering what it was all about
so I think to understand this you have to have an at least average knowledge about anime series because that's what a parody is all about...
all in all:
Excel Saga is extremely nuts.....and......that's good

The box set is reasonably priced as box sets go. One of the nice features of the Excel Saga DVDs beyond the many extras that are included with the discs is the inclusion of an option that explains many of the cultural references and jokes.
The jokes come so fast and furious that many times they will go right over your head. The option allows you to see little bubbles like what you would see on VH1's Pop up video.
Excel Saga was first shown in Japan in 1999. All of the pop culture, Japanese, and anime references come from before then. And it spoofs everything... from Evangelion, robot shows, Fists of the Northern Stars, Star Wars, American Cartoons, hentai, teen dramas, Captain Harlock, sports anime, Power Rangers... it is pretty merciless at times...
