I think that's a plain stupid rule to not have any English dub voices at all in a video; it reeks of "Japanese VAs are far superior than the English VAs" than "we don't want to piss off the American licensors of the anime series being used." English dubs have for the most part gotten better by leaps and bounds all across the board than 10 years ago. Sadly, almost all conventions have this rule in place in one form or another, with the exception of AWA's contests.genestarwind21122 wrote:That means you can't use the english voices, but if you did the japanese voices with your own subtitles then that would be fine.Adv1sor wrote:The rules say, in part:Would this mean that I could not submit this AMV because of the parts toward the end where you hear the character's speaking in English?II. B. Anime Music Videos cannot incorporate the subtitles or dubbed sound from licensed commercial translations. The companies that license and produce these commercially translated versions of anime attend the convention, and we just don't need grief from them over this issue.

i agree. I would like to push for a change in the rules. AMV's have so many grey areas. what's the problem with using copyrighted voice overs when we use copyrighted music, footage, and Japanese voice overs. I would like to see this rule changed because it allows us to create more western feel to our videos. Case in point, it's ridiculous to have a Japanese narrative in any part of any video when u have to subtitle it. Also, it takes away from most of the music we use in our videos (usually with English lyrics) Let me know if there is a more appropriate way to make this amendment. I say that there be some sort of poll or vote. This is OUR contest in the first place. The contest and others like it are appealing because of the freedom we have with nonrestrictive rules for how we create our videos. Save for this rule.

Actually the reason is that the English dub voices can cause some problems in a contest. It is the same senario with the music industry. The problem is if ADV or any company or any of the voice actors show up and you use some of the English dub they could really get pissed off about it. Also this prevents some spoliers. For eventhough you may see what happends you don't hear what the characters are saying. If someone used an important line from the anime that could give it away then it would spoil the anime. Another thing is eventhough you could say that amv's contain spoilers how do you know for sure if someone didn't twist the story. There are so many ways you could go about this and reasons why it isn't aloud.Brakus wrote:I think that's a plain stupid rule to not have any English dub voices at all in a video; it reeks of "Japanese VAs are far superior than the English VAs" than "we don't want to piss off the American licensors of the anime series being used." Actually despite what you may think, from everything I've heard that rule is in place because the domestic companies want it there not because of any 'superiority' of any of the voices. I don't totally understand it, but that's the way it is. If you have that much of a problem with it, take it up with the contest coordinators.Brakus wrote:I think that's a plain stupid rule to not have any English dub voices at all in a video; it reeks of "Japanese VAs are far superior than the English VAs" than "we don't want to piss off the American licensors of the anime series being used." Honestly in my case, given the choice between using the dub voices and using the original and subbing it, when working with anime I'd use the original voices for authenticity. Were I making a(nother) Powerpuff Girls video, I'd obviously use the original (English) voices for it too, because it's what seems most appropriate to me. *shrugs*

It's not our contest it's their contest.
Their contest, their rules.
I don't like it, but what the heck? I'll just submit something else.

You can always submit a "Request Change of Locked Video Information" form. It's this time of year when the admins check those requests more than ever.Parodic Productions wrote:Well, I'm automatically out of the contest this year.
Even though I released my video in the summer, for some reason it's listed as 2005/00/00. I tried fixing it for some time, and now it's come up and bit me in the ass.
